Connections: Sports Edition sparks May 30, 2026 debate

For May 30, 2026, Connections: Sports Edition puzzle No. 614 hit a modest 2-out-of-5 difficulty—yet the answer categories still split solvers, from playing surfaces to Orlando clubs, Champions League winners, and Arsenal players.

By the time most players hit the final grid squares for May 30, 2026’s Connections: Sports Edition puzzle No. 614, the real pressure wasn’t the difficulty level.

It was the promise at the top of the page: that the bottom of the article would list the answers and hints for all four categories. If you wanted to solve hint-free, you were told to play first.

Game No. 614 landed at 2 out of 5 on the day’s difficulty scale. That number, though, didn’t keep the puzzle from delivering the familiar challenge of Connections: grouping 16 words into four categories without making four mistakes.

The first category—marked yellow—was playing surfaces. The words in that group were WOOD, GRASS, ICE, and TURF.

The next group came in green and was all about Orlando teams: MAGIC, ORLANDO CITY, PRIDE, and UCF.

Blue then pushed players into bigger-name territory: the last four clubs to win the Champions League were listed as PSG, REAL MADRID, MANCHESTER CITY, and CHELSEA.

Purple closed the board with a team-specific set of Arsenal players: EZE, RICE, SAKA, and TIMBER.

Connections: Sports Edition is The Athletic’s first-ever daily puzzle designed around connections between 16 words on the game board. The goal is simple—group words or objects into four sets of four based on shared commonalities—until the board clicks into one correct solution. The warning stays the same: there’s exactly one solution. so words that seem like they fit more than one category can turn into costly distractions.

Each category comes with a color that shifts from more straightforward to more challenging: yellow for the easier side, then green, blue, and finally purple for the trickier end.

For anyone wondering how the puzzle is made, the creator of Connections: Sports Edition is Mark Cooper, who also serves as a managing editor for college sports here at The Athletic. He previously worked as the managing editor for breaking news.

The next puzzle is scheduled to go live at midnight in each player’s time zone. For now, puzzle No. 614’s categories—surfaces, Orlando clubs, Champions League winners, and Arsenal names—are the checklist solvers will be comparing as scores roll in.

  1. I thought “MAGIC” could’ve been something else? Like I didn’t even play it, just saw the headline and figured it’d be about basketball then it’s Orlando soccer?? Confusing for no reason.

  2. So the Champions League category was PSG, Real Madrid, City, Chelsea right? I got that part but then EZE/RICE/SAKA/TIMBER threw me off cuz Arsenal names always mess with my brain for some reason. Also they said one solution but I swear I clicked wrong and it still worked??

  3. Connections sports edition sounds fun but the fact it lists the answers/hints later is kinda dumb. If you already know you’re gonna check, what’s the point. Anyway Orlando clubs category seems random too—UCF being in there like that was unexpected. I’m probably missing something but whatever.
