At 4:00 AM ET on Thursday, May 28, Fortnite servers went dark for scheduled maintenance—not a crash, not an emergency. By the time players logged in after the patch deployment, v40.41 was already waiting with something more than the usual behind-the-scenes work.
This was the final major patch of Chapter 7 Season 2. and Epic bundled it with a hotfix that adjusts seven weapons at once—changes now live across all Battle Royale modes. The timing matters because the season’s last eight days are already in motion. and today. Saturday. May 30. Community Day is also underway. offering free cosmetics to anyone who logs in before Sunday. May 31 at 9:00 AM ET.
Seven weapons changed on May 28—and they change how fights play out
Epic published the full list of the May 28 balance changes through the FortniteStatus account on X. Every adjustment is now active:
– Exotic Recon Bow: The projectile hitbox was enlarged, making long-range shots easier to land. The bow scans for enemies after impact and functions like a mobile recon tool. – Pulse Pistols: Damage retention at range improved, and reload speed was slightly increased. – Overdrive Pulse Rifle: Magazine capacity was slightly reduced. Epic previously cut its fire rate earlier in May after describing the rifle as firing “a liiitle too fast.”
– Twin Mag SMG: Clip size was slightly increased. – Hammer Revolver: Base damage was slightly increased. – Assault Rifle: The headshot multiplier was reduced. giving targets marginally more time to react and move when caught in the open. – Finger Guns: Damage was slightly reduced ahead of their return.
Epic’s hotfix arrives with the clearest signal in the bow change
Of the seven shifts. the Exotic Recon Bow’s enlarged projectile hitbox is the one that stands out most in day-to-day gameplay. Fortnite bows have always lived in a niche because their hit detection at range punishes shots that are close but not exact. This change doesn’t alter how the bow scans enemies after impact or the bow’s overall damage profile—it changes what counts as a hit at distance. Shots that might previously pass an opponent now register.
For players who avoided the Recon Bow because it demanded near-pixel precision, this is the kind of opening that doesn’t just buff a weapon—it changes who will pick it up in the season’s closing stretch.
The Pulse Pistols improvements are smaller, but the weapon’s identity stays intact. Their core strength remains mobility: Blink closes distance, and Recall rewinds damage taken. The range damage retention improvement extends their threat window slightly further from the player. but it doesn’t turn them into a mid-to-long-range option. Epic’s tweak is meant for the back-and-forth of mobile fights where small gaps open and close quickly.
Other changes tilt toward sustained pressure and punished precision
The Overdrive Pulse Rifle and Assault Rifle are the most obvious nerfs in the update.
The Overdrive Pulse Rifle has had its magazine capacity slightly reduced. Epic has adjusted this weapon multiple times in Chapter 7 Season 2. and even after the accumulated nerfs it’s still described as a strong pickup: it delivers fast damage at close quarters and grants its Overdrive movement effect while equipped. But the magazine reduction hurts sustained wall pressure in Builds mode. A player relying on spraying walls at volume will now have to reload mid-engagement more frequently. Zero Build players should feel it less, since structural pressure is irrelevant there.
For the Assault Rifle, the headshot multiplier was reduced. The practical effect is simple: when someone catches an opponent at range. the target now gets marginally more time to react. build. rotate. or break line of sight. Epic’s change doesn’t rewrite how the Assault Rifle is used—it softens the reward for a first-shot read.
Two close-range buffs land alongside two damage cuts
The Twin Mag SMG got a slight clip size increase, meaning more rounds before reloading. The Hammer Revolver also received a slight base damage increase, lifting per-shot value.
Finger Guns sit on the other side. Their damage was slightly reduced ahead of their return during Community Day. Community Day began this morning at 9:00 AM ET, and the event runs for 24 hours. Finger Guns are back in the loot pool for that window.
Community Day is live through Sunday morning—with free cosmetics and stacked bonuses

Inside the 24-hour event window. multiple gameplay bonuses run at once: Finger Guns are in the loot pool. enlarged pizza slice stack limits are active. and every chest on the island is upgraded to Rare Blue. The season launched on March 19, 2026, making Chapter 7 Season 2 one of the shorter Fortnite seasons on record at approximately 11 weeks. V40.41 is described as the final gameplay state before the season concludes, with no further balance changes or major content updates expected before Shattered.

That’s what made Thursday’s update feel different for players: it started with planned downtime at 4:00 AM ET on May 28. and by the time the patch was deployed.
