Late on July 4, the sound of fireworks in Brooklyn’s Coney Island turned to something far more alarming.

Around 10:35 p.m. ET, officers responded to a shooting near W. 30th Street, where a family barbecue was taking place in a courtyard, the New York Police Department said. By the next day, NYPD officials confirmed that at least eight people were shot and injured, including four children.

At a news conference on July 5, NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch said the department’s preliminary investigation indicated that a man wearing all black and a ski mask allegedly fired over a fence into the courtyard.

No one has been identified as a suspect, and the investigation is still ongoing.

The children injured ranged in age from 6 to 14, police said. The 6-year-old was shot in the abdomen. The 7-year-old was hit in both legs. The 12-year-old was shot in one leg, and the 14-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh.

Tisch said the four children and three adult victims are in stable condition. A 21-year-old woman was shot in the stomach and is in critical condition.

Police said other adults include a 37-year-old man shot in the shoulder, a 33-year-old man with a gunshot wound in the chest, and a 25-year-old woman wounded in the leg.

Tisch told reporters there was no indication of an argument or altercation before the shooting.

She also said police are investigating whether there is a connection between the incident and a separate gang-related homicide that occurred on the same block earlier in the week.

“It’s no place for this kind of violence in our city,” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said during the July 5 news conference. “We will not tolerate it, we will fight it with every single tool at our disposal.”

The sequence of events has left investigators focused on what brought a family gathering under attack—whether it was a targeted act, an escalation tied to prior violence, or something else entirely. For now, officials are withholding the suspect’s identity as they work through leads.

  1. I saw “ski mask” and “all black” and that’s just scary. How you gonna shoot over a fence at a family barbecue with kids there, smh.

  2. Wait so no argument first? That seems weird, like it was random or connected to some gang thing from earlier. Also fireworks turning into gunshots?? Brooklyn sounds wild every single year.

  3. All I’m hearing is there was a shooting near W. 30th Street and 4 kids got hit, which is just awful. But Mayor said they’ll fight it with every tool like… what tool exactly, more cops? And why does it always start “man in all black with ski mask” like that tells us anything. Feels targeted even if they say no altercation.
