Colombia-Portugal in Miami sells out; Martinez orders early

The World Cup match in Miami wasn’t just popular — it was competitive enough to force even the coach to plan ahead.
Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez bought tickets for his family early in December, before the general scramble tightened further. He later explained what that pressure felt like in plain terms: “Well. it means I had to buy tickets for my family in November. That’s what it means. Because I knew it was going to be difficult to get tickets.”.
The demand has been stark from the start. For Portugal’s Group K match against Colombia, ticket requests hit five million in the first 24 hours after the Random Selection Draw in December. It’s also been described as the most wanted ticket of all 72 group-stage games at this summer’s World Cup.
On resale sites, the numbers reflect that imbalance. Some tickets listed for the Saturday match on platforms such as StubHub have been priced above $6,000.
The pull is easy to understand when you look at who’s expected to show up. The Colombian diaspora in Florida is large. with the state having the highest population of Colombian Americans in the U.S. according to the 2020 census. On top of that, the broader spotlight around Cristiano Ronaldo has added gravity to the matchup. Ronaldo’s sixth World Cup is expected to be his last. and his presence has made every Portugal moment feel like it could be something final.
On the field, the game carries immediate consequences for both teams’ chances to control what comes next. Colombia is top of Group K after winning both of its games. Portugal can still overtake the South Americans with a win.
Qualification paths then hinge on who finishes first and second. Whoever clinches first place in Group K will play one of the third-place finishers from Group D. E. I. J or L in Kansas City. The runner-up will go to Toronto and play the second-place team from Group L. which could be Croatia. Ghana. or even England.
Asked what this match’s demand says about fans and what the experience means beyond tickets. Martinez returned to the emotion that drew families to the sport in the first place. “I think it’s fascinating. The passion of the game in a difficult moment in the world,” he said. “Football still brings unity, it brings passion, it brings inspiration for the kids. All the values that you want to see in a human being. They are in football, in a football pitch and that makes me extremely, extremely proud.”.
He closed with a wish that feels just as personal as it does strategic for a coach watching his family sit in the stands. “So I hope tomorrow football wins and inspiration of anyone that watches the game.”

So he had to buy tickets in November?? Wild.
Five million requests sounds fake lol. Also $6,000 on StubHub is insane, like how is that even allowed.
I don’t get why everybody wants Portugal so bad when it’s just Miami… isn’t Miami like always sellout for soccer anyway? Maybe it’s just Ronaldo merch hype, not the tickets.
This article is basically saying “buy tickets early” like we don’t know. The Colombian diaspora makes sense, but $6k resale seems like scalpers charging Ronaldo prices even for people who aren’t even fans. Also he said he bought tickets for his family in November, which means the coach was already planning before the draw? That’s what it sounds like to me, idk.
