College football rankings after Week 1: Updated Coaches Poll, AP Top 25 for SEC
WATCH Kirby Smart still needs young players ‘to grow up’ for SEC grind
Georgia football coach Kirby Smart speaks to reporters on Sept. 5, 2026 after 63-3 win over Tennessee State.
SEC teams took care of business in Week 1 of the college football season.
The conference went 16-0 to start the campaign, marking the first time since 1997 it swept the opening weekend.
The biggest storyline in the SEC was LSU, which after a brief delay started off the Lane Kiffin era with a 51-10 statement win at home over Clemson with ESPN’s “College GameDay” in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Quarterback Sam Leavitt was fantastic, passing for 230 yards with a touchdown while rushing for 113 yards with two scores.
Ole Miss capped the conference’s weekend off with an impressive win, taking down Louisville 41-38 on Sunday, Sept. 6 thanks to a walk-off 48-yard field goal. The Cardinals, the first team left out of the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll, were a solid early-season test for the Rebels, who are coming off a College Football Playoff semifinal appearance last season.
Elsewhere, ranked teams Georgia, Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Alabama, Tennessee and Missouri all dominated against lesser opponents.
