Does the US Open have a late-night scheduling problem?
US Open matches are running late, with some finishing after 2 a.m. We asked fans if the schedule is too late or if they love the late-night tennis.
The third round of the US Open was a rough one for American players.
Taylor Fritz, Madison Keys, Ann Li and last year’s runner-up Amanda Anisimova were all knocked out of the tournament.
There are 10 players representing the United States left in the US Open entering the round of 16 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
Coco Gauff and Iva Jovic will face each other in the fourth round while Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton are holding it down on the men’s side.
“There’s a lot of pressure here as an American trying to do well,” Gauff said in her post-match interview after her third-round win over Cristina Bucșa. “I think everybody wants to win this tournament, but I think for Americans, I think it’s even more special.”
Both the women’s and men’s champions from last year, Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz, will face an American player in the next round en route to defending their titles.

Taylor Townsend
Taylor Townsend defeated Diana Shnaider in the third round in three sets. It was her toughest match of the tournament so far after she beat her first opponents in straight sets. She advances to play top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka, who is seeking to win the US Open for the third time in a row.

Jessica Pegula
Jessica Pegula is the No. 3 seed in this year’s US Open and was the runner-up of the 2024 competition. In the third round this year, she dropped the first set, but battled back to beat Leylah Fernandez. It was her first test of the tournament after defeating her first two opponents in straight sets.

Emma Navarro
Emma Navarro had to battle through two nearly three-hour matches in the first two rounds. But her third round defeat of mixed doubles champion and Wimbledon runner-up Karolína Muchová was in straight sets.

Coco Gauff
Coco Gauff is seeking to reclaim her title after winning the 2023 US Open. Her journey in this year’s tournament so far has been pretty smooth sailing. She’s won each match in straight sets, including her third round victory over Cristina Bucșa. Her next match will be her 19th time appearing in the round of 16 in a major.

Iva Jovic
Iva Jovic won her first two rounds in straight sets. Then, she had to put up a fierce effort in the third round to defeat Alexandra Eala. The match lasted just over three hours.

Tommy Paul
Tommy Paul has been soldiering through the tournament. In the third round, he powered through five sets to defeat Alexander Bublik. His next opponent is defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.

Ben Shelton
Ben Shelton’s US Open so far has been an endurance test with the last two matches lasting more than three hours. In the third round, he beat Denis Shapovalov. He’s had his girlfriend, soccer superstar Trinity Rodman, cheering him on.

Alex Michelsen
Alex Michelsen has been dominating the US Open so far. He’s won all three matches in straight sets, including his third round victory against Daniel Merida Aguilar.

Frances Tiafoe
