Alicia Silverstone has noticed a big change in media since the ’90s
Alicia Silverstone, while promoting her new TV series “Irish Blood,” tells USA TODAY’s Ralphie Aversa one thing she doesn’t miss about the 1990s.

A TV series based on the classic 1990s teen comedy “Clueless” is in the works at Paramount+, with Alicia Silverstone set to reprise her role of Cher Horowitz.
A “Clueless” series was previously announced as being in the works at Peacock in 2025. But earlier this year, reports emerged that the streamer was no longer moving forward with the project, leaving its fate uncertain.
Along with the announcement of the show’s new home, Paramount+ revealed a plot synopsis for “Clueless,” which is described as a “sequel event series.”
“Picking up 30 years after the original film, beloved Beverly Hills icon Cher Horowitz has figured out a lot: She’s successful in business and has mastered motherhood – that is, until her daughter’s high school years, and Cher finds that parenting a teenager makes her feel ‘clueless’ all over again,” the synopsis reads.
Silverstone is producing the “Clueless” TV series, which will begin production in Los Angeles in 2027. Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the original movie, is also serving as executive producer. Other than Silverstone, no other casting has been announced.
“‘Clueless’ is coming home,” Jane Wiseman, Paramount+ head of originals, said in a statement.
“Thirty-one years ago, Alicia Silverstone’s Cher Horowitz captivated audiences with her signature chic style, sharp wit and relentless optimism, helping make ‘Clueless’ a box office hit and instant pop culture classic. We’re especially proud to be filming this much-anticipated series in Los Angeles, honoring its starring role in the original film while investing in the city’s exceptional talent and crews.'”
Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash and Brittany Murphy also starred in the 1995 comedy, which was a loose adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Emma.” It was Rudd’s first movie role. Murphy, who played Tai Frasier in the film, died in 2009 from pneumonia at age 32.
“Clueless” previously spawned a three-season TV series that first aired on ABC in 1996 before moving to UPN, with Dash returning and Rachel Blanchard replacing Silverstone.
Speaking with USA TODAY in 2025, Silverstone reflected that “no one could have known” that “Clueless” would become a cultural phenomenon, and she recalled walking through a shopping mall in 2020 and being recognized by a new generation of fans.
“These 14-year-olds were staring at me and I thought, ‘Why are they staring at me?'” she said. “And they came over like, ‘Ah!’ and then I realized, ‘Oh, [the movie has] really caught on again.'”
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in 2025, Silverstone said she couldn’t “wait to step back into Cher’s skin” but noted the project was in its “very early stages.”
“I’m obviously excited,” she told ET. “I never thought that that was something that I would ever do because I wouldn’t want to mess up this thing that we all love so much. So we will do our very best to honor the original movie that we love and also bring something new to it. That’s the goal, and I believe we will execute that goal.”
