Chris Brown’s former housekeeper went before a jury after a 200-pound shepherd—Hades—allegedly attacked her outside the singer’s home in Tarzana, California, in 2020.
Two weeks of testimony ended with the jury siding with Maria Avila and ordering Brown to pay $13 million. The award came after Avila told the court she was suffering from PTSD and faced severe scarring on her face and left arm.
Avila reportedly needed skin-graft surgery on her left arm, and she was left with “raised and pitted skin.” The injuries didn’t stop there: she also has scars on her forehead and under her eye.
On the stand. Brown said he warned Avila not to go outside without his security guards. describing Hades as an unfriendly guard dog. Avila was attacked while taking out the garbage. Brown testified that he heard Hades growling and ran outside to find a bloody Avila lying on the walkway outside his front door. and she wasn’t moving.
“The blood kind of freaked me out,” Brown recalled.
Brown also admitted he left the scene and let his staff handle the attack, saying it was done on the advice of his manager as he tried to avoid what he described as a media circus. Hades was euthanized following the attack.
The jury’s decision didn’t end with Avila’s award. It also granted $885,000 to Avila’s sister, who had been working in Brown’s home during the attack. Avila’s husband, Oscar Olivo, was awarded $50,000.
Outside the courtroom, the story kept moving—fast—through fans. In TSR’s comment section, reactions ran from jokes about pay to wide-eyed questions about the job itself. One user, @alexes_ciarra, joked, “Meet & Greets about to be $20K. $25K if you come dressed as a dog 😂.” @iamkeylarichardson wrote. “Man I ain’t never want to be bit by a dog until now 😂.”.
User @thereallattosister said, “Man I just went to google a Caucasian Shepard Dog 😳 and baby you gots to know I would’ve never accepted the job.”
Others questioned how to work in a celebrity’s home. User @realwiseguy_ceo asked, “How I sign up for housekeeping for a celebrity?👀👀👀🤣.” One comment, from @love_meorleave_me96, sided with Brown’s account, writing, “He told her ssa not to go outside when those dogs were there!!!”
For now, the legal outcome is clear: after Avila alleged she was disfigured in the attack, the jury’s verdict translated into a $13 million order—along with additional awards for family members who were also affected by what happened outside that Tarzana home.
