Amelia Dimoldenberg is closing up shop.
The British comedian and host announced Sept. 3 that her popular YouTube interview series, “Chicken Shop Date,” will end after a final run of episodes, bringing the internet phenomenon to a close after more than a decade.
Dimoldenberg, 32, shared the news in a statement posted to Instagram, reflecting on how an idea she developed as a teen grew into a show that placed her across the table from some of the biggest names in entertainment.
“When I was 17 I had a fantastic idea that I might meet the love of my life on a date in a chicken shop,” Dimoldenberg wrote. “I’ve spent my entire twenties sitting across from the most incredible people, people I’d always dreamt of meeting. All of them charmed me (some more than others) and I definitely charmed them.”
The creator described the series as her “very own rom-com” and said it allowed her to meet people she had once only dreamed of interviewing. The show’s simple premise paired celebrity interviews with the deliberately unglamorous setting of a fast-food chicken restaurant.
Although she once imagined the show continuing indefinitely, Dimoldenberg said she now feels it is “time to move on” to a new adventure.
“I never thought I’d stop Chicken Shop Date, I thought maybe it would be a part of me forever, and in some way it always will, but I feel like it’s now time to move on from this adventure and onto a new one,” Dimoldenberg continued.
The goodbye will not be immediate, however. Dimoldenberg promised fans “a few final dates,” which she said would be released soon. She did not reveal who will appear in the remaining episodes or announce when the final installment will arrive.
A few hours prior to making the announcement, Dimoldenberg posted a short teaser video on social media from the iconic chicken shop setting of her show saying “I think we need to talk.” The video immediately sparked concerns from followers that Dimoldenberg was hinting at the show coming to an end. The top comment under the video posted by user @pitataing716, read: “Amelia…are you breaking up with us?!?!?!?!?!.”
Over the years, Dimoldenberg welcomed musicians, actors, athletes and other public figures to the table. Some of the show’s memorable guests have included Billie Eilish, Andrew Garfield, Daniel Kaluuya, Cher, Dave, Central Cee, Little Simz and Louis Theroux.
“Chicken Shop Date” began as a concept Dimoldenberg created as a teenager before it became a YouTube series in 2014. The show’s format helped distinguish the show from traditional celebrity interviews and frequently produced clips that spread widely across social media.
Dimoldenberg is also the founder of Dimz Inc., the media company that produces “Chicken Shop Date” and houses her other creative projects. The show’s social media following has grown to more than 4.4 million subscribers, while its YouTube content has generated about 1 billion views, according to Variety.
