Chase points unlock American Airlines—without AAdvantage
You can book American Airlines flights with Chase Ultimate Rewards points even though Chase can’t transfer directly to AAdvantage. The practical routes: transfer to Oneworld partners that use Avios, or book directly through the Chase Travel portal—though the r
A Chase account can feel like a goldmine—until you try to use it for American Airlines and hit a wall. Chase Ultimate Rewards doesn’t transfer directly to American Airlines’ AAdvantage program, and the usual “just move points over” play doesn’t work.
But that doesn’t mean your Chase points are stuck. There are two clear paths to book American Airlines flights: moving points to the right Oneworld partners that use Avios, or redeeming points through the Chase Travel booking platform.
Chase Ultimate Rewards points can be transferred to Oneworld partner programs at a 1:1 ratio for American Airlines-operated flights. American Airlines is part of the Oneworld alliance. and multiple Oneworld airline loyalty programs are transfer partners of Chase Ultimate Rewards. In practical terms, that means your next step is choosing which partner currency you want to use.
The three airline loyalty programs that let you book American Airlines flights with Chase points are Aer Lingus AerClub. British Airways Club. and Iberia Club. These programs use Avios as their loyalty currency—but award rates and availability can differ across each airline’s site. The guidance here is simple: check each option, or compare them with a tool like Point.me.
To make the idea concrete, the piece offers two examples. You can book American Airlines economy-class flights from New York-area airports to Miami International Airport (MIA) through the British Airways Club program for 18. 000 Avios plus 5.60 in taxes and fees. Another example shows a different route: a direct flight from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) to Frankfurt Airport (FRA). operated by American. can be booked through British Airways Club for 28. 000 Avios and about $328 in taxes and fees.
If you’d rather not chase award availability across partner sites, Chase Travel offers a separate option. Chase Travel is the issuer’s travel booking platform that lets you redeem points for travel instead of cash. It matters most when you can’t find the American Airlines flight you want through a partner program—or when partner redemption rates don’t look like a good deal.
The redemption value depends on which card you have and when you applied. Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Chase Sapphire Reserve for Business℠ cardholders who applied before June 23. 2025 can redeem their points at a flat rate of 1.5 cents apiece on American Airlines flights. That rate applies on points earned prior to Oct. 26, 2025 and redeemed until Oct. 26, 2027; after that, the value drops to 1 cent.
Holders of the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card who applied before June 23. 2025 can redeem at 1.25 cents per point for American Airlines redemptions during the same time frame. But for anyone who applied after June 23. 2025 for any of the above cards. the redemption value for American Airlines flights is set at 1 cent per point.
When award rates are high or partner availability is limited, Chase Travel becomes the fallback—because it bypasses partner award charts altogether. Even if transferring to partners often produces more value, the portal rates of 1.25 or 1.5 cents per point aren’t exactly small.
Still, there’s a clock running for most cardholders: the value for American Airlines redemptions will eventually settle at 1 cent per point across the board, putting Chase Travel in line with other issuers’ travel portals like American Express Travel, Capital One Travel and Citi Travel.
The bottom line is that you can book American Airlines flights with Ultimate Rewards points without ever transferring to AAdvantage. Your best route depends on what you can find: if partner award space looks workable. transferring Chase points to Avios-using Oneworld partners can pay off; if it doesn’t. Chase Travel may be the simpler path.
And if you’re looking to build a point balance before you book. the same guidance points to current signup offers for new applicants. Right now. for a limited time only. new applicants who get approved for the Chase Sapphire Reserve can earn 150. 000 bonus points after spending $6. 000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. With the Sapphire Reserve for Business. the offer is also 150. 000 bonus points. after spending $20. 000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

So basically you can book AA with Chase points but not really??
I tried to do this once and it was like a scam because it wouldn’t let me choose American Airlines. Turns out I needed some weird British Airways points thing? Idk. Still kinda sounds like Chase is just making it complicated on purpose.
Wait so Chase points transfer to British Airways, but then you use that to get American flights? I feel like that’s not the same as transferring to AAdvantage at all lol. Also the 1:1 ratio—does that actually hold up or is it only for certain dates? I always get stuck when I try to book.
Chase Travel portal is basically the only way, right? Because otherwise you’re moving points around to Aer Lingus or Iberia and hoping the award rates don’t change. I don’t trust those “check availability on each site” tips either, because they never show the same stuff. Also the article says New York to Miami for 18,000… but I bet in real life it’s way more and the taxes are always annoying.
