For four innings on Wednesday, Eury Perez looked like he was setting the tone for the whole game. The Blue Jays never found the board. Miami kept him in control.
Then the start abruptly ended.
Perez was removed after four innings due to a right hamstring spasm. It happened after he had been cruising toward what would’ve been his best start of the season—one where he allowed the Blue Jays just three hits, all singles, and issued no walks while recording a season-high nine punchouts.
Before the fifth inning, Perez appeared to suffer the injury while doing some stretching. He needed assistance to get down the steps in the Miami dugout before heading to the clubhouse.
The Marlins are expected to have more clarity in the days to come about how severe the hamstring problem is. For now, the team is listing it as a spasm rather than a strain—an indication that Perez may be able to avoid missing his next start.
That next start is tentatively set for next Tuesday in Washington.
