The Jaylen Brown era in Boston has reportedly ended with a trade that lands him across the Eastern Conference.

Jaylen Brown is headed to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George. two first-round picks. and two second-round picks. according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. For Boston. the deal closes out a run that began with Brown’s arrival in Boston nearly a decade ago and ended with him taking home NBA Finals MVP in 2024.

It’s also the latest jolt to an offseason that started with uncertainty and turned into a full-on reset. The Celtics moved on from a franchise pillar after nearly coming close to dealing him last week to Milwaukee. in a summer already crowded with speculation about Brown. The timing is stark: Boston had built a reputation as a perennial contender behind Brown and Jayson Tatum. and that long stretch of success now gives way to a seismic change.

The groundwork for the shift had been laid in the weeks leading up to the trade. Multiple reports had connected Brown to a blockbuster package involving Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. Boston ultimately missed out on Antetokounmpo, who was dealt to Miami. But trade momentum involving Brown didn’t stop there; even after the Antetokounmpo sweep ended. NBA insiders continued to describe Boston as still trying to move him.

On June 23. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said. “So. now. what I expect to happen is a bidding war for Jaylen Brown [from] other teams in the league. ” adding that teams had been preparing for the possibility that it wouldn’t be Boston winning the Giannis sweepstakes and that there would be a “Jaylen Brown market.”.

As Boston continued to field offers, Brown’s trade value appeared to slide. The Athletic’s Sam Amick wrote on Tuesday. “Barring a drastic and unforeseen change in the market. the Boston Celtics will have to significantly lower their asking price if they plan on trading [Brown] anytime soon. ” and said Boston had been asking for “up to four first-round picks (in addition to players) for a team to land the 29-year-old forward.”.

By Wednesday, that lowered price crystallized into a deal that sends Brown to a rival contender in the East.

The draft capital moving with Brown was outlined by Charania. The 76ers are reportedly sending a 2028 first-round pick that could convert from a first to a swap that is more favorable to Boston. along with a 2031 unprotected Philadelphia first-round pick. They are also reportedly sending a 2028 second round—most favorable of Golden State/Oklahoma City/Milwaukee—and a 2030 second—most favorable of Washington/Portland/Phoenix.

For Boston, Paul George’s arrival is the anchor of the return. The 36-year-old wing averaged 17.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game over 37 games this past season with Philadelphia. George is signed for the 2026-27 season with a cap hit of $54.1 million and has a player option for the 2027-28 campaign.

That return lands with extra weight because Brown comes off what was described as the best season of his career. With Jayson Tatum out for most of the season while recovering from a ruptured Achilles, Brown rose to the occasion. Brown averaged a career-best 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists, and he helped Boston earn the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.

Brown also earned All-NBA Second Team honors. With Tatum returning in 2026-27. there was hope that Boston could reestablish itself as a legitimate contender moving forward—yet last week. Brad Stevens wouldn’t commit when asked about Brown’s future in Boston. even after Antetokounmpo was dealt to Miami.

Stevens said. “Jaylen Brown is a big part of us.” He added. “I’m never going to predict the future. but every indication. everything that I think about over the past few years has been building around those guys. right?. So obviously, you never know. But at the same time. the one thing I want to make very clear is how valued he’s always been.”.

Stevens continued, “He’s been amazing. He’s been an amazing teammate, a great person to be around. And whether that run ends 10 years from now when he retires, or before, there’s a lot to celebrate. We have a great relationship, an open relationship where we talk about everything. But I don’t want to predict the future. I look at it as, this is our team.”.

Earlier this offseason, Brown said that this past year was his “favorite” of a 10-year run with Boston. On June 22. he acknowledged he knew about the trade rumors swirling around him. saying on Twitch. “To all the people who have doubted me. that want me to do this or want me gone. you’re turning me into a monster.”.

Now. Brown will look to turn that anger into results with the 76ers. stepping into a role as a key cog on a roster built to compete—while the Celtics. who once leaned on him and Tatum to run the Eastern Conference. move forward without the player who helped them win a championship across 10 seasons in Boston and take home NBA Finals MVP in 2024.
