Trump’s Freedom 250 collapses as blue cities celebrate

While Donald Trump and his “Freedom 250” team press forward with a faltering Independence Day celebration in Washington, D.C., blue cities are drawing crowds with alternative July Fourth events—often featuring major performers—and a bipartisan group that Trump

On a weekend meant to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Washington’s Independence Day centerpiece has turned into the kind of spectacle that travels faster than fireworks.

Donald Trump’s “Freedom 250” effort—marketed as a 16-day production built around the Great American State Fair in Washington. D.C.—was supposed to be the easiest win in a campaign year. Fox News set up a broadcast tower and pushed wall-to-wall coverage. But the images that spread online told a different story: clips circulated of Fox News hosts insisting huge crowds were present in front of a live backdrop showing few people.

Musical performers initially listed for the event, described here as mostly nostalgia acts from the 1980s and 1990s, dropped out. Trump leaned on the idea that his presence alone would draw massive crowds and insisted that the turnout would be enormous. Yet NBC News estimated about 1. 000 people attended the opening ceremony. far short of Trump’s claim that 45. 000 had come to hear his speech.

The showpieces didn’t help. A proposed 166-foot stone arch meant to serve as a monument to Trump—built as a hastily erected plywood-and-vinyl version—began falling apart. The only Trump-driven project that appeared to draw people with any consistency was his repainting of the Reflecting Pool. Visitors went not to celebrate, but to mock it, and the event resulted in at least seven arrests.

This weekend, the contrast is set to sharpen. Fox News appears to be returning to the studio rather than continuing to insist that empty fields represent massive crowds. Across the country, blue cities are hosting alternative July Fourth concerts, with big stars scheduled to perform. Unlike the Washington effort. much of this programming is being organized by America250. the bipartisan group that was expected to handle the D.C. celebration until Trump sidelined it in favor of Freedom 250, which is under his control.

There is also a political fight behind the party planning. On Thursday. House Democrats released a report titled “From Vanity to Insanity.” The report features whistleblowers accusing Trump of defrauding donors who believed their money was going to America250. only to have it rerouted to Freedom 250. House Democrats say that through “a series of diversions and misrepresentations. ” Freedom 250 drained America250 of the “resources it needed to function.” They add that the “cumulative effect. and the apparent purpose. ” was to render America250 unable to succeed and to install Freedom 250 in its place.

The Democrats’ report contends that Freedom 250’s dominance left America250 celebrations “smaller and sparser” than they likely would have been if Trump had not pushed them aside. Even so. the remaining America250 events are drawing bigger attention and more recognizable names than the list Freedom 250 put forward—particularly after many performers dropped out over fear of being associated with Trump. not because of weather.

In Philadelphia, organizers are leaning into the symbolism. The headline this weekend is a concert on the “Rocky steps” in front of the art museum, adjacent to where the Declaration of Independence was signed. The lineup includes Christina Aguilera, Jill Scott, and The Roots.

In Los Angeles, the Smashing Pumpkins are set to perform alongside Chris Stapleton.

In Milwaukee, SummerFest is headlined Saturday by Jelly Roll—an artist with right-wing fans, but one scheduled to spend Independence Day in a city that went nearly 70% for Kamala Harris in 2024.

Heat is threatening at the same time. A record-setting heat wave this weekend is described as putting many shows at risk of shutdown. New York City has chosen to offer a livestream instead. airing on the America’s Block Party website. featuring Mary J. Blige and Brad Paisley. The article says that even if some shows are cancelled due to the weather. the performers booked for America250 remain far more popular than the acts Freedom 250 had lined up.

Back in Washington, the mood appears colder. Trump has insisted the Great American State Fair is a “smashing success” and “packed with happy people,” while his team struggles with the optics of low attendance. Behind the scenes, the president is reportedly angry about the celebration’s failure.

On Wednesday night. CNN’s Kaitlan Collins reported being told that “the aerial image of the crowds from last week’s his rally enraged him so much that officials ended up deleting them.” The report ties that anger to another Trump claim: that the June 24 opening ceremony would be “the Greatest Rally. EVER!”.

He is planning to speak again on July Fourth. though the reporting here describes it as “threatening to speak.” Trump told a crowd Wednesday. “I’m gonna make a really long speech.” The concern is familiar: huge numbers left while he was speaking at the opening ceremony. and fireworks are planned for 11 p.m. This schedule is described as seemingly designed to accommodate Trump’s long-windedness. with fireworks delayed while he is scheduled to begin speaking two hours earlier.

And because Freedom 250’s success is being asserted publicly while its images undercut the message, the blame-shifting has begun. The article describes conspiracy theories about invisible “vandals” destroying paint on the Reflecting Pool as only the beginning.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is described as hollering about “ingrates” after protests at a Thursday event for the National Guard. Actor-turned-Fox News pundit Dean Cain posted a photo of a mostly-empty state fair and told critics. “Any negative reactions to this post expose the haters as anti-American. Seek help,” while continuing to claim he saw “thousands of people” that the photo does not show.

Fox News host Emily Compagno attacked states that refused to finance booths at the Great American State Fair, whining that Trump is being “discarded” and “not included.” She also argued governors should be “disqualified” from “higher office” for what she framed as a slight.

House Democrats’ report argues the real driver of the entire semiquincentennial effort has been personalization rather than public commemoration. In the report. Democrats conclude the record reflects “a sustained effort. beginning before the President took office. to make the semiquincentennial an occasion for President Trump’s personal celebration.”.

Put together. the weekend’s competing images—packed alternative celebrations elsewhere and a Washington event struggling to match the claims being made for it—are turning a national milestone into a high-speed referendum on who is actually delivering a July Fourth people want to attend. The reporting closes with the idea that a celebration built around Trump’s ego has “sucked the life out of America’s 250th birthday. ” leaving supporters increasingly absent even from the event designed to prove otherwise.

The article says Trump has even framed his motivation around self-glorification, reportedly telling Fox News’ Jesse Watters, “I’m building a monument to myself because no one else will.” For Freedom 250, the fallout is now showing up in the most basic measure of a party: the crowd.
