For years, breast implants have been part of the public conversation around beauty and transformation. But just as many celebrities have gone under the knife to get implants in the first place, others have been just as willing to say goodbye—sometimes permanently.
Dr. John Paul Tutela, a NY and NJ board-certified plastic surgeon, points out that the two main types of breast implants are saline and silicone. “They each have their own characteristics and percentages of certain complications that sometimes require the removal of an implant,” he said.
Complications are one major reason implants get removed. Tutela says people may develop issues that range from malposition to breast implant illness—often referred to as BII. Then there’s the problem of ruptures, which can push someone toward removal or replacement.
When saline implants rupture, Tutela compares it to “a water balloon popping and deflating.” Silicone, by contrast, won’t deflate the same way, so silicone ruptures aren’t as easy to detect. Diagnosing that kind of complication requires an MRI—a process Yolanda Hadid has said she’s been through.
Yet for all the medical reasons, Tutela says the majority of breast implant removals are ultimately driven by cosmetic preference. Some people decide it’s simply time to move on. “Some simply decide it’s time (see: Chrissy Teigen). ” the article notes. while others keep the door open to what comes next.
In many cases, removal doesn’t automatically mean an end to implants forever. Tutela says that after taking them out, people either choose to get fresh implants or decide to say goodbye to ‘em for good.
