Cavaliers weigh David Griffin return amid LeBron talk

Cavaliers weigh – Cleveland’s LeBron James hopes are tied up in front-office decisions after Mike Gansey’s move to the Philadelphia 76ers, with an NBA insider suggesting the Cavaliers could bring back David Griffin if Brandon Weems isn’t promoted to full-time GM. The money math

Cleveland’s LeBron James sweepstakes hasn’t gone quiet—it’s just gotten messier.

The Cavaliers have “faded” in the chase. with a possible Los Angeles Lakers re-signing scenario re-emerging as the Lakers’ leverage is discussed. while the Golden State Warriors’ interest remains in the picture. Still, the story isn’t finished in Cleveland. An NBA insider. Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson. raised a scenario that would bring the Cavs back into the frame—through their front office first.

Robinson said the Cavaliers’ recent loss of Mike Gansey to the Philadelphia 76ers could trigger a hiring decision. In a discussion described by Robinson. he said the Cavs have considered bringing David Griffin back as general manager if Brandon Weems doesn’t receive what many would call a well-earned promotion to the full-time GM.

Robinson’s specific wording was direct: “I’m being told that if they don’t bring in Brandon Weems to the general manager role, the Cavaliers have considered, in conversation, bringing David Griffin back in the general manager role.”

Griffin’s name isn’t just familiar in Cleveland. He was the Cavs’ GM in 2014. a period that helped pull LeBron back to his home state in free agency from the Miami Heat. Under Griffin. Cleveland completed a six-player trade that brought Kevin Love to the roster. setting up a Big Three with LeBron and Kyrie Irving. Griffin also helped bring in championship-level pieces—J.R. Smith, Iman Shumpert, and Timofey Mozgov—via trade.

And while front-office changes can sound like the business side of a sports story, Robinson tied the chatter to the part fans care about most: how Cleveland could make the numbers work if LeBron were to return.

“Cleveland” is where the math becomes a plot point. Robinson explained that. mathematically. LeBron James would need a team-friendly extension from James Harden-style expectations—specifically. he said James Harden would need to sign a team-friendly extension. From there, the Cavaliers would have to move Dean Wade and Max Strus. Robinson added that Wade would have his bird rights renounced, while Strus would be traded.

Robinson also said LeBron could fit through more than one route: an MLE option or a sign-and-trade.

That’s where the leaguewide competition tightens. Right now, it’s being reported that the Lakers are not offering anywhere close to a max contract. If that’s true. Robinson’s framework suggests competition could shift toward the non-max lane—leaving the Warriors as a potential factor because the MLE could become a battleground.

“Perhaps the Cavs are in that boat as well,” Robinson added through the scenario he was laying out.

The uncomfortable truth for Cleveland is that the LeBron timeline isn’t being decided in a vacuum. It’s being shaped by who gets empowered in the front office. by what contracts can be maneuvered. and by how other contenders—especially the Lakers and Warriors—approach the same decision. In the middle of all that sits a single swing factor: whether Cleveland turns internal momentum into a full-time GM role for Brandon Weems. or falls back on the familiar machinery of David Griffin.

  1. I don’t even follow all this but the “faded” part means they gave up already, right? If LeBron wants money then just pay him, Cleveland always talking like it’s rocket science.

  2. Wait who is Brandon Weems again like is he the coach? Cuz I swear I saw something on TikTok that said Griffin is basically the reason LeBron left first, so bringing him back is kinda weird. Unless it’s a different Griffin timeline? lol

  3. This whole LeBron sweepstakes got messier like they’re passing notes in the office. If the Lakers re-sign him then congrats Cleveland you waited too long again. Also Mike Gansey to Philly like okay but why does that even change Cavs GM stuff?? Just sounds like insider talk to me.
