For a moment in Boston, the bar wasn’t just a place to watch the World Cup—it became part of the celebration.
Gov. Maura Healey and Mayor Michelle Wu were both recently spotted behind the counter pouring pints as the city leaned into tournament festivities. Healey was seen serving pints for members of Scotland’s Tartan Army at The Haven. a Scottish restaurant in Jamaica Plain. on Thursday. Her visit came a day before Scotland’s match against Morocco. While behind the bar, Healey declared June 18 “World Cup Fan Appreciation Day.”.
“This is for you guys,” she said after announcing the day, prompting chants of “No Scotland, no party” from the crowd.
Wu also took her turn at the bar. She was seen pouring pints Friday at The Dubliner, a downtown Boston Irish pub, according to a social media post from the pub. That same day, the U.S. team defeated Australia 2-0.
“Things got so busy with the Tartan takeover we had to call in the big guns… @mayorwu stepped behind the bar to pour some pints,” the pub’s caption reads.
Wu has also been present at other World Cup-related events, including watch parties and celebrations marking Haiti’s return to the tournament.
The high-profile bar stops are happening as Boston makes room for more tournament drinking. Nearly 200 bars across the city were granted permission to extend last call by an additional hour—allowing alcohol service until 3 a.m.—after legislation signed by Healey. At the same time. the city created two downtown social districts where visitors are allowed to drink in public through the end of July.

So is this like campaigning or is it actually for fans lol
I love that they were pouring pints but also why does every holiday turn into “big guns” and alcohol until 3??
Wait I thought Wu was the one that hates drinking in public? now it’s like social districts?? Maybe I’m mixing her up with another mayor.
This is cute and all, but World Cup stuff is gonna get outta hand. Like next week they’ll be serving pints on the T and calling it “Fan Appreciation Day: Part 2.” Also I’m guessing Scotland won so that’s why they’re doing it? The article said match coming up so idk.
