Cavaliers trade No. 29 pick for Kings’ Alex Karaban

Cavaliers trade – Cleveland has agreed to move the No. 29 overall pick to Sacramento for a package that includes the Kings sending the No. 34 pick and a 2032 second-rounder to the Cavs, with Sacramento using its newly acquired first-round selection on UConn forward Alex Karaban
The Cavaliers’ draft room suddenly shifted from planning to executing—one pick, one trade, and a clear destination for Sacramento’s next decision.
Cleveland has agreed to trade the No. 29 overall pick to the Kings, with the deal set to send the No. 34 pick and a future second-rounder to Cleveland. Sacramento will use its newly acquired first-round selection to take UConn forward Alex Karaban.
The Kings, in return, will send the Cavaliers their 2032 second-rounder on top of this year’s No. 34 pick.
The move also comes after Cleveland was already weighing options around the No. 29 selection earlier today. as the franchise explored a deal that would move its draft positioning from the first round into the second. The practical idea behind that shift was straightforward: cap-strapped teams often look toward second-round contracts that can lead to more budget flexibility. By moving down, Cleveland could potentially sign its No. 34 pick to a rookie-minimum deal rather than a rookie scale contract, creating some savings.
Sacramento’s side of the equation now points to Karaban.
Karaban’s UConn story is still fresh—after a redshirt year in 2021/22. he began his college career in a way that rarely happens. He won back-to-back national championships with UConn in 2023 and 2024. started full-time for those title teams. and over four years with the Huskies made 150 starts. This spring, he became automatically draft-eligible after that redshirt-to-starter path.
The timing of his college run left one last mark: he nearly added a third national title in April, but UConn fell to Michigan in the championship game.
For the teams now turning the page, Karaban’s profile shows a blend of production and decision-making. He’ll turn 24 later this year and is described as a high-effort, high-IQ player. During his senior season in 2025/26, he averaged 13.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 34.3 minutes per contest, posting shooting splits of .464/.374/.851. His performance earned him a spot on the All-Big East first team.
With the draft pieces in motion, the trade becomes more than a swap of numbers—it’s a re-routing of Cleveland’s financial strategy and a direct path for Sacramento to bring in Karaban with its newly secured first-round pick. More to come.

So Cleveland just traded down and picked like… a UConn guy? Isn’t that what every team does now lol.
I don’t get why Cleveland gave up the 29th. Like the whole point is to get better right? “Cap-strapped” sounds like they just ran outta patience.
Wait is Alex Karaban the one from Michigan like the title game? I saw something about UConn losing and figured Michigan would draft him. NBA trades confuse me.
They’re really doing a 29 for 34 plus a 2032 second?? That far into the future is wild. Meanwhile Karaban is turning 24… can’t believe they’re betting on a guy whose college career is basically already over.
