Cardiff Clinch Historic Playoff Spot in URC Victory

Cardiff secured a milestone 22-16 victory over the DHL Stormers, marking their first playoff appearance in the current Vodacom URC format.
Both teams had a lot to play for but it was Cardiff who got what they were looking for as they relied on a brilliant defensive effort and their ability to exploit the ongoing DHL Stormers defensive frailties out wide to clinch a well deserved 22-16 win at Cardiff Arms Park on Friday night.. It was a big moment for Cardiff as the win in their final Vodacom URC league fixture ensured they made history
by advancing to the playoffs in the competition in its current guise for the first time.. By scoring four tries they also picked up a bonus point to lift the Welsh team into fourth position overnight.. For Cardiff to retain that position will depend on the Vodacom Bulls tripping up against Benetton at Loftus on Saturday afternoon, something that appears unlikely, but Liam Belchar and his charges will be happy with wherever they finish in
the top eight after being so near and yet so far from qualifying in previous seasons.. The Stormers were already sure of a top four finish and home quarterfinal but were playing to finish in the top two, something that a win would have secured them.. In the end after a toothless display where they struggled to fire any meaningful shots on attack against Cardiff’s swarming and aggressive defence, the Stormers had to be content
with the losing bonus point that assured them of at least third place.. Had it not been for Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s kick from in front of the posts after the hooter the Stormers could have been overtaken by the Bulls, who would have gone level on points with a full house against Benetton had the Stormers left Arms Park without any log points.. Not that it means that much because both South African teams in the
top four will now have to travel for their semifinal should they get that far.. That is provided of course Leinster win against Ospreys on Saturday.. VISITORS MADE MASSIVE EARLY STATEMENT THAT PROVED A MIRAGE The Stormers made a massive statement in the first seven minutes as they capitalised on a poor start by Cardiff, with the ball from the kick-off not going over the 10 metre line, by forcing penalty advantage at the resultant
first scrum on the halfway line and then getting a scrum penalty at the resultant set up near the Cardiff line.. The Stormers were completely dominant in the scrum for the entire game and after overcoming some brave defence by Cardiff, who lost their skipper to a yellow card in the process, it was lock Adre Smith who dotted down as off another attacking scrum the Stormers forwards drove over the line.. Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s conversion made
it 7-0 after as many minutes and Cardiff were a man down.. With the forwards looking so dominant it seemed the Stormers were set to crush their opponents but it proved a mirage.. Momentum counts for a lot on 4G pitches and the simple fact of the matter was that on the night Cardiff proved much better than the visitors when it came to retaining possession.. Every time they got the ball it felt like
they held onto it for several minutes.. ANOTHER FIELD DAY FOR OPPOSITION WINGS That was a bit reminiscent of last week against Ulster for the Stormers, as was the success their opponents achieved every time they set up a wide play in going for a try.. Ulster wing Werner Kok scored a hattrick of tries last week in Belfast and this time it was the turn of Cardiff’s wings to enjoy a field day as
Jacob Beetham, with a brace, and Tom Bowen scored three between them.. Bowen’s second effort was admittedly a brilliant bit of contortion positioning on the dive in the right corner but there was nonetheless a similarity in all the four tries Cardiff scored in the sense they got access to the Stormers line going wide.. The first Beetham try came from a cross kick from flyhalf Ioan Lloyd, who was the other try scorer, and
then came a superbly built up try that was rounded off by Bowen to put Cardiff into the lead for the first time.. It was a lead they were never to relinquish, and although Feinberg-Mngomezulu drew three points back with a penalty to make it 12-10, flyhalf Lloyd made an excellent impersonation of a wing when he, like Beecham later, somehow contorted his body into a position from where he could dot the ball down
in the corner without going out of play as he was tackled by Stormers defenders.. The conversion didn’t find the mark but after being under the cosh early and under pressure every time the Stormers had a scrum opportunity, the hosts would have been emboldened by being able to go into the break seven points up (17-10).. By then the Stormers had lost lock Smith to a yellow card after he made high contact in
an upright tackle, but they managed to stabilise straight after hafltime and another penalty from Feinberg-Mngomezulu, with the decisions to kick probably an acknowledgement of just how good Cardiff were defensively, brought the deficit back to four points.. THOMAS FRUSTRATED STORMERS AT BREAKDOWN However four minutes later there was daylight between the teams on the scoreboard as Beecham scored his second try off some clever buildup work.. After that it was mostly the Stormers attacking
to try and close the gap, and like against Ulster they had some opportunities that were wasted.. Unlike against Ulster, however, that was as much down to the excellent and determined Cardiff defence as it was Stormers error.. Although the Stormers’ scrum was always dominant, Cardiff did well to check their mauls, while the biggest source of Stormers frustration would have been the excellent breakdown work of Dan Thomas, who did what opensiders are supposed
to do by being a constant thorn in the Stormers’ side.. Unlike against Ulster somehow the Stormers scoring seemed a lot less likely, and so it proved, with Cardiff ending the game having conceded just that solitary seventh minute try to Smith.. It was a disappointing way for the league part of the Stormers’ season to end but in all fairness Cardiff were excellent on the night and showed why they have only lost once
in 11 starts at home this season.. Cardiff 22 – Tries: Jacob Beetham 2, Tom Bowen and Ioan Lloyd; Conversion: Ioan Lloyd.. DHL Stormers 16 – Try: Adre Smith, Conversion: Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu; Penalties: Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu 3.
