Shortly after 6 p.m. on Thursday, a black 2024 BMW X3 came through the floor-to-ceiling window of the Black Cow restaurant in Newburyport, sending shockwaves through a busy dining room.
Newburyport City Marshal Matthew Simons and Fire Chief Stephen Bradbury said the driver. a 67-year-old woman from Groveland. was uninjured and cooperated with police and first responders. Alcohol was not suspected to be a factor in the crash. but the crash remains under investigation by the Newburyport Police Department.
Inside the restaurant, three customers were injured. First responders evaluated them on scene, officials said. Two men were transported to Anna Jaques Hospital. The third person did not want to go to a hospital, Simons and Bradbury said. Officials said none of the injuries are immediately believed to be life-threatening.
An inspector with the Newburyport Building Department determined that no structural damage was done to the building. Even so, Simons and Bradbury said the bar area will need repairs. The restaurant is still open, but with the impacted section closed, officials said.

“Alcohol not suspected” is always the part they say right away like that solves it lol. Those windows are huge too, that’s scary. Glad the driver’s not hurt but still, why was she driving like that.
Wait I thought it was a truck? Like I saw something about a BMW and then my neighbor said it was like a delivery van. Either way I’m just shocked the restaurant is still open. If there’s repairs needed just close it for a day, come on.
67-year-old woman from Groveland, okay so sounds like one of those “confused at the wheel” situations. Not trying to be mean but I’ve seen this before—people hit the gas instead of the brake. Alcohol not suspected… so was it the car malfunctioning? Also the bar area needs repairs, so like did the window shatter all over the place and that’s why they kept people out? Glad no life-threatening injuries though, that’s what matters.
