During the renovation period. interior seating will be unavailable. along with the dining stations that normally serve a variety of hot and cold single-portion dishes throughout the day—from egg and ham breakfast sandwiches to shrimp and grits. Capital One says the modified guest experience will center on grab-and-go offerings and alternative food and beverage options. During renovations, the cafe area adjacent to the check-in desk is the only area of the existing lounge that will remain open.

Guests will also continue to have access to the cafe area for full-service coffee bar offerings. tea. canned beverages. pastries. and select menu items available through a dedicated food service area.

For many frequent flyers. the practical worry isn’t just what disappears—it’s what the reduced capacity might mean when IAD gets crowded. Like other airline and credit card lounges. Capital One Lounge users have often dealt with long wait times during peak hours. It’s unclear how this limited operating model will affect wait times, seating, or capacity.

Capital One says guests can use the Capital One app to check capacity and add themselves to the waiting list before arriving at the lounge, or add their name once they arrive.

This comes after Capital One moved to mitigate overcrowding in its lounges by overhauling its policy effective Feb. 1. The new policy removed free guest lounge access for Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and Capital One Venture X Business cardholders. as well as additional authorized cardholders. It also eliminated complimentary lounge passes for Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card holders.

Capital One has sought to make sure travelers know what alternatives exist at IAD. There are five Capital One Lounges and two Capital One Landings, and the lounge at Dulles opened Sept. 7, 2023. During the Dulles renovations. cardholders looking for a more full-service lounge experience have other options. including an Air France-KLM Lounge and a Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse in Terminal A. as well as an Etihad Lounge that operates as a Chase Sapphire Lounge; Priority Pass members through Capital One can visit the latter once per calendar year.

  1. I swear they do renovations every other month. Why can’t they just keep the bar open though, that’s literally the point. Early fall sounds like forever when you’re traveling.

  2. Wait they’re upgrading ventilation so there’s no seating and no bar? That seems backwards. Also why do I care about the bee-shaped vessel if the whole lounge is closed lol. Sounds like they’re trying to save money under the disguise of upgrades.

  3. Grab-and-go only starting July 9… so basically it’s just the check-in cafe area? That’s gonna mess up my “pre-flight routine” for sure. I don’t even know what half those drinks are supposed to be, but I’m still mad because I always planned around the full bar. Also “limited, cafe-style seating just outside the lounge” like… where exactly? People are gonna be standing around with coffee.
