When a school safety app flagged threatening language on a school-issued device late last week, Sandwich administrators moved quickly—bringing a school resource officer and the Sandwich Police Department into an investigation.
Sandwich police said Tuesday they are investigating an incident involving a student at Sandwich Middle High School. working with school officials and the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office. Police said “appropriate actions have been taken to ensure the safety of students, staff, and community members.”.
Investigators did not release details about the alleged threats or identify the student, citing that those involved are juveniles. Police said they remain committed to ensuring “a safe and secure learning environment for all students in our community.”
In a letter sent to families on Tuesday, Sandwich Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Joseph P. Maruszczak said the families of the two students who were allegedly targeted have been notified and are working with authorities. Maruszczak said the threat was discovered late last week after GoGuardian. the district’s safety app. flagged threatening language on a school-issued device and alerted administrators.
Maruszczak said the district responded immediately. “Very rapidly, our School Resource Officer, along with the Sandwich Police Department, commenced an investigation,” he wrote. He added that the student has not been in school since the incident and “nor will the student be in school for the remaining days of the school year.”.
Maruszczak said the district is grateful for its partnership with the Sandwich Police Department and for what he described as their quick action to keep students and staff safe.
The incident remains under investigation by the Sandwich Police Department and the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office, according to school officials and police.
