Canada 1, Ireland 1: Warm-up ends with injury scare

But an errant foot from Cyle Larin caught Ireland’s Jamie McGrath in the head, leading to a penalty kick that undid Les Rouges’ dominant work to that point in the exhibition game Montreal. Final score: 1-1. The result, in front of a the 20,000 person crowd, was all Jesse Marsch could have wanted. He got playing time for his healthy starters against competition similar to what they will face against Qatar and Bosnia-Herzegovina when the World Cup kicks off next week. He got the tactics

he wanted and the performances he hoped to see. An impressive outing from Ismaël Koné, who started his pro career in this stadium with the Montreal Impact, and an aggressive evening from Liam Millar on the wing. The Hull City winger gave Ireland fits on the left flank, and led Canada with five shots on the night. And crucially, one thing Marsch didn’t see was any more injuries to his already-bruised roster. Canada’s goal came off a Stephen Eustáquio corner kick, which arrowed into a

mob in the six-yard box and deflected in off Irish centreback Jake O’Brien in the 23rd minute.

  1. So they drew 1-1 but Marsch “got playing time” for starters… cool, but the penalty kick is what matters right? I didn’t even see the goal was a corner deflection.

  2. I swear I read somewhere it was actually Cyle Larin who got injured? Either way, the ref really should’ve stopped it sooner if somebody got hit in the head. Also I’m confused how Canada’s dominance got “undone” when it was only 1-1.

  3. Maybe I’m wrong but this feels like the coach wanted Qatar/Bosnia info more than the match. Like they’re just running drills and then one dude catches an errant foot and suddenly it’s all doom. Koné started in that stadium right? I remember Impact stuff like years ago, so that part was kinda wild. Hopefully everyone’s fine though because head injuries are no joke.
