Sunday night in León, Mexico, had the feel of a coronation that wouldn’t finish. Canada and the United States traded control from the opening tip, and the scoreboard refused to settle—13 lead changes and 10 ties before the first half ended with the two teams locked at 35-35.

When the buzzer finally sounded, Canada had won 67-65 to capture the 2026 FIBA U18 AmeriCup gold medal. It was a first for Canada at this level—an official milestone for a program that had been a steady presence but had never quite broken through for gold.

The result also ended Team USA’s run of seven consecutive titles dating back to 2010.

Javion Tyndale set the tone for Canada, spearheading the victory with 19 points and eight assists. But the finishing details belonged to the whole team, especially at the foul line. Canada converted 17 of their 24 free-throw attempts. Team USA managed just 3-of-8 from the stripe.

Moments after the final buzzer, Canada Basketball marked the occasion with a simple message on social media: “OUR GAME NOW.”

The bigger weight of the win is hard to ignore when you look at what came before. Canada has long been among the stronger programs in the FIBA U18 AmeriCup, yet gold had remained elusive—until Sunday. Adding to the shift in the narrative. Canada also recorded a tournament-record 77 rebounds in a single game earlier in the competition.

  1. I swear the US always loses these close ones at the foul line. 3-for-8 free throws is wild. Canada really just outplayed them at the end, congrats.

  2. Wait so Canada had 77 rebounds earlier and then suddenly they’re champions? I didn’t even know that tournament existed tbh. Also Javion Tyndale had 19 and 8 assists but idk how that’s “first ever gold” if they were “steady presence” whatever that means. Sounds like refs were involved or something, because 13 lead changes is a lot.

  3. “OUR GAME NOW” is a little cocky for U18 but hey they won. Seven straight titles since 2010 is crazy though, so I guess one bad free-throw stretch and it’s over. I’m just shocked it was in León, Mexico like isn’t that where soccer fans go? Either way Canada got it done.
