Canada dominates Qatar for first-ever World Cup win

Canada 6-0 – Jonathan David ended a four-match World Cup scoring drought as Canada delivered a 6-0 demolition of Qatar in Vancouver, the country’s first-ever FIFA World Cup victory. David’s hat trick powered the rout before Maxime Crépeau kept a clean sheet, as Canada move
VANCOUVER — The sellout at BC Place felt like it could shake the roof off. Red jerseys filled the stands, Maple Leafs fans sang Bryan Adams’ “Summer of 69,” and every time Canada stepped forward, the noise came with it.
Then Jonathan David did what Canada had been waiting for through four previous World Cup matches: he scored.
On Thursday, Canada powered to its first-ever FIFA World Cup win with a 6-0 rout of Qatar, dominating from the opening moments to the final whistle and sending the team into a tie for first place in Group B standings with Switzerland. The breakthrough was loud, fast, and ultimately relentless.
David put Canada ahead in the 29th minute, then struck again in the third minute of added time in the first half to take the game away from Qatar early. He completed his hat trick in the second minute of stoppage time. Cyle Larin made it 2-0 in the 16th minute.
After that first-half surge, Canada kept pushing. Nathan Saliba. who came in for an injured Ismaël Koné. scored in the 63rd minute. and Jacob Shaffelburg added a fifth in the 75th. The night finished with Canada in complete control at both ends: Maxime Crépeau didn’t face a shot. earning a clean sheet as Canada led 30-2 in shot attempts.
The result reshaped Group B immediately. Canada moved into a tie for first place with Switzerland and improved its chances of advancing to the knockout round of the 48-team tournament. Canada’s next game is against Switzerland on Wednesday at BC Place Stadium.
The joy had one sharp edge. Koné was carried off the field on a stretcher with a left leg injury suffered in the 51st minute, forcing the change that brought Saliba into the match. Qatar also spent long stretches down to 10 men after Assim Madibo was issued a red card, leaving the team down two men.
From the start, Canada controlled the tempo in black uniforms and looked sharper in the opening phases than the scoreline would suggest. Their first real chance came in the seventh minute when David blasted a shot from the side of the net, only for goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada to handle it.
The stadium didn’t just react when Larin struck—it erupted.
Larin. the scorer who had been at the center of Canada’s opening 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina. banged in the loose ball for a 1-0 lead after David’s shot was blocked by Abunada. David then stretched the advantage to 2-0 with a right-footed shot from about 15 metres out, curling inside the post.
Before halftime, the momentum turned into something close to inevitability. In first-half extra time, Larin took a shot that was stopped, but David smashed the rebound in for a 3-0 lead.
There was controversy in the 31st minute when forward Tajon Buchanan was hauled down by defender Homen Ahmed. At first it looked like Canada would be awarded a penalty kick. but VAR overruled the decision and Ahmed was shown a red card. Still. the man advantage didn’t turn into the fourth goal right away—Canada was awarded a free kick but David sent it over the top of the net.
A few minutes later, Buchanan had another chance, but a Qatar defender cleared it off the line, keeping the score from widening further before halftime.
Qatar’s resistance briefly flickered back in the middle stages through set-piece football. Saliba’s goal came off a free kick, a shot that hit the post and went in.
Shaffelburg then made it impossible to come back, striking a goal that deflected in off a Qatar player to push the score to 5-0 and put the match fully beyond doubt. The final stretch belonged to Canada’s rhythm and Qatar’s difficulty finding answers.
The wider picture in Group B was already there—Switzerland had defeated Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1 earlier in the day in Los Angeles—and the standings reflected how tight the group was before kickoff. Canada and Switzerland both led Group B with four points each, with records of 1-0-1. Bosnia-Herzegovina and Qatar each had one point from 0-1-1 records.
Still, Canada’s World Cup history made Thursday’s result feel even heavier. In eight games across three World Cups, Canada had one win, six losses and a draw. The country hadn’t scored in its first World Cup appearance in 1986 in Mexico and managed just one goal at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
That long wait ended in Vancouver with a performance that looked like a team finally pulling the door shut behind it.
Canada is ranked 30th in FIFA world rankings. while Qatar is 49th. but the ranking gap didn’t capture the difference on the night. This wasn’t just an upset. or even just a victory—it was Canada’s first-ever World Cup win. delivered with authority. emotion. and a crowd that never once sounded like it was leaving BC Place early.

6-0 is wild, Canada really showed up!
Wait Jonathan David had like a drought for four matches?? That’s crazy timing. Also the headline says Canada dominates Qatar but Qatar didn’t even get a shot?? Not sure how true that is but 6-0 is still insane.
I don’t wanna be that guy but didn’t Qatar have a bunch of players out or something? Like surely there’s more to it. Either way, I’m just shocked it was in Vancouver and not like, Toronto. Hat trick for David though… I’ll give them that.
Good for Canada, finally! But why is everyone acting like this guarantees they go through? It’s group stage, Switzerland will probably smack them next match or whatever. Also BC Place was sold out so I’m guessing that helped a lot, like the crowd did half the scoring lol. Clean sheet too?? That’s just not normal.
