Camera pops up at second base as Yankees trail

By the time the camera finally stopped moving, it was already a punchline on the Yankees’ sideline.
On Monday. June 22. an in-ground camera embedded in the dirt near second base made its way up out of the ground during the Detroit Tigers–New York Yankees game. and it was enough to halt play. The interruption didn’t come when the stadium was quiet or when the action had slowed. It landed during a live moment with the Tigers ahead 3-1 and Gerrit Cole on the mound.
The officials and staff on the field had to react fast. It took half a dozen people working around the area—kicking and tapping the camera—to figure out what to do next and get the game moving again.
On the broadcast. Detroit’s duo of Jason Benetti and Roman Dirks treated the standoff like a show. leaning into what fans were seeing: footage from the rogue camera’s up-close angle of Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm trying to bury the device. As dirt and debris started piling in. the view became increasingly obstructed—less like a baseball broadcast and more like a person slowly covered over.
Chisholm’s frustration came through in the moment as he tried to shake off the situation, with Benetti and Dirks narrating lines that captured the conflict between player and equipment.
“No! No! No! I can’t see.”
At one point, the broadcast also played up the camera’s “job” failing and the confusion it caused on the field, including the moment when the view was described as an obstructed seat.
“This is an obstructed view seat now.”
Detroit kept the pressure on after the delay, and the game never lost its edge. When the teams finally got back to full speed, the scoreboard still reflected Detroit’s advantage—3-1—with Cole still pitching.
Detroit went on to win 5-3.
The broadcast moment was absurd, but it also carried a reminder that even the most routine parts of baseball can break loose in seconds—especially when something meant to record angles refuses to stay put and forces the field to pause for people to chase down a wayward device.

Why do they even put cameras in the dirt like that, that’s asking for chaos.
I saw the clip and thought Jazz Chisholm was gonna get hurt honestly. Like why is the camera moving up at all?? That’s wild.
Is this the one where Cole got blamed for it or whatever? Baseball fans always find a way to pin stuff on the pitcher. Also “obstructed view seat” had me dead.
Comerica Park is cursed or something because first it’s a camera popping up, then the announcers act like it’s a comedy show. If it was embedded there shouldn’t it just… stay? I’m surprised they even tried to kick it instead of shutting it down right away. Yankees can’t catch a break even with random tech glitches.
