Kao Kim Hourn, secretary-general of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), has expressed his pride in the accomplishments of the Cambodian students who completed in a regional Asia-Pacific artificial intelligence competition.. The May 14 final of the event, organised by Huawei under the ASEAN Foundation framework, took place at ASEAN headquarters in Jakarta, Indonesia.. Cambodian students from the American University of Phnom Penh (AUPP) and Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC) showcased AI-driven innovations
using Huawei technology to support the garment industry through smart defect detection and quality-control solutions as they competed in the regional finals of the Huawei ICT APAC competition.. The competition attracted more than 8,600 students from 13 countries.. They took part in cloud computing, networking, computing and innovation categories, in the presence of Hourn and regional leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region.. Students from AUPP won second place in the AI Innovation category and qualified
for the global finals, set to be held in Shenzhen, China, this June.. Not to be outdone, students from ITC secured third place in the AI Innovation category, while AUPP students took third in in both the Networking and Cloud categories.. “Youth talent is the source of innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship in the region,” Kao Kim Hourn said, noting that ASEAN’s Digital Masterplan 2030 identifies digital talent as central to the region’s future vision.. During
a meeting with the students, Hourn described the annual event as an important platform for showcasing AI development and technological innovation among young people from ASEAN and across the Asia-Pacific region.. He praised the Cambodian students for their determination and success in what he described as a highly competitive contest, saying their achievements reflected the hard work, intelligence and perseverance of Cambodian youth.. The ASEAN secretary-general encouraged the students to continue pursuing research and study
in science and technology in order to become an important driving force for the region’s future development.. “I hope that winning and achieving success this year will become motivation for all of you to continue studying, researching and working even harder in the fields of science and technology,” he said.. He also praised Huawei and the ASEAN mechanisms involved in organising the event, saying the competition provided valuable opportunities for young people to demonstrate their
abilities and gain experience in advanced technologies.. According to a press release, Cambodian students stood out in the regional finals through their use of AI to solve problems in the garment sector, one of Cambodia’s most important industries.. The statement added that the success not only enhanced Cambodia’s reputation on the international stage, but also reflected the growing capability of the country’s human resources to keep pace with the global digital revolution.
