Caleb Williams shrugs at where Bears play next

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams says he’ll play wherever the team builds its next stadium—whether it’s Hammond, Arlington Heights, Chicago, or elsewhere—while the organization weighs options amid political and legislative pressure over funding and potential t

Caleb Williams didn’t sound interested in the map.

Asked Thursday about where the Bears should play their home games going forward, the quarterback said he doesn’t care whether the team ends up in Hammond, Indiana, Arlington Heights, Chicago, or “anywhere else.”

“I’m going to play wherever there’s 120 by 53⅓ [yards] and it’s marked up with white lines and two end zones,” Williams said. “I’m OK with whatever. Whatever decision they make is whatever decision they make. I just want some green and my teammates and coaches and another team out there. And fans.”

It’s a strikingly simple stance in the middle of a complicated stadium debate. One week ago, the Bears’ board of directors voted to continue exploring building in Hammond. That vote, the team has not framed as a finished deal or an ironclad commitment to relocating across state lines.

Still, the decision has set off a chain of political reactions in Illinois. Bears president/CEO Kevin Warren told Illinois lawmakers he looked forward to continued conversations with them. Gov. JB Pritzker said he’d call a special legislative session if politicians gain momentum on finding a way to give the team a property tax break.

The Bears have also said they consider Arlington Heights, and not Chicago, the only suitable choice in Cook County.

Williams’ answer cuts straight through the noise of those competing proposals. But it also lands at a moment when every part of the decision—where the team plays, what incentives are offered, and what lawmakers are willing to do—hangs on steps that are still in progress, not final.
