Early Wednesday morning, Ciarre Campbell—brother of Baltimore Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell—was booked into Fulton County Jail on charges including murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm or knife.

The case centers on the death of their mother, Nateal Campbell. Calais Campbell’s family released a statement confirming her death, but did not comment on the charges against Ciarre.

“We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell,” the statement said. “While the details of her passing are still being investigated. we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father. her beloved Chuck. and in the arms of our Lord and Savior. Jesus Christ. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family.”.

Atlanta police said they received a call on Tuesday afternoon requesting a welfare check at Nateal Campbell’s home. Officers who responded found her body.

Lt. Christapher Butler. head of the Atlanta Police Department’s Homicide Unit. said police had previously been called regarding issues at the home. In remarks provided to WSB TV. Butler said a brief look into the history showed calls as far back as April tied to what he described as a possible arson incident. He also referenced “some indications of possible some mental health issues with an individual.”.

Calais Campbell is heading into his 19th NFL season and has been widely respected in the league. He was named the NFL’s Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in 2019 and is a six-time Pro Bowler. Beyond the Ravens, his career has included stops with the Cardinals, Jaguars, Falcons, and Dolphins.

The Campbell family has also been active beyond football. They founded the Charles R. Campbell Foundation to honor their late father and support mentorship and education. The foundation’s co-founders included both Nateal Campbell and Ciarre Campbell. Its literature says that Calais attributes much of his success to growing up in a “household bursting at the seams with love.”.

With the charges now filed against his brother, the focus is shifting to what police can establish about what happened leading up to Tuesday’s welfare check—and what prompted earlier calls that Butler described from April.

  1. I saw Calais in the news and my first thought was like, is this the family drama stuff? Welfare check sounds like they were already worried. Sad either way, and I hope they get answers.

  2. Wait so the brother got charged but they’re saying there were arson calls back in April? That’s like… related to the mom’s murder, or they just had a random fire scare? Also mental health mentions always get weird fast, like they never say what actually happened.

  3. So Calais is respected and does charity, and then suddenly his brother is in jail for murder? I’m not saying it’s fake but it feels like something bigger is being left out. Like where was everybody else if police were called before? And that line about being reunited with their father… I dunno, that just hit hard.
