Contreras ejected again after helmet throw sparks brawl

Contreras ejected – Willson Contreras was tossed for a second straight game after throwing his helmet toward Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli during a heated exchange that cleared both benches. The brief fight ended quickly, but multiple players—along with interim manager Chad Trac

BOSTON — The tension had been building for minutes before it broke on a full-count pitch in the top of the fourth. Cade Cavalli struck out Boston first baseman Willson Contreras, and as Contreras walked back, the Nationals pitcher leaned into the moment.

Cavalli yelled, “Sit down boy,” at Contreras as he made his way toward the Boston dugout.

Contreras, already wearing the heat from a rough stretch, didn’t keep it in the box. After Monday’s game. where he hit a three-run homer off Washington’s Miles Mikolas and celebrated with a massive bat flip that he later apologized for. Contreras walked toward Cavalli on the mound. The two exchanged words as both dugouts emptied.

Boston catcher Carlos Narvaez tried to hold Contreras back, but Contreras broke loose long enough to leap and throw his batting helmet in Cavalli’s direction. For a moment, it was chaos—benches clearing on both sides—before things settled down quickly.

Even after the dustup ended, the consequences came fast. Contreras was ejected, and the flurry of ejections didn’t stop there. Boston interim manager Chad Tracy, Boston outfielder Nate Eaton, and Mikolas were all tossed as well.

The helmet-throw ejection was the second in as many nights for Contreras, a rarity for the Red Sox. It was the first time that’s happened to a Red Sox player in the club’s 126-year history.

The context around Contreras has been personal as well as professional. The 34-year-old Venezuela native acknowledged that he is having a difficult time while his native country tries to recover from a pair of devastating earthquakes last week. Monday’s ejection came early. too—he was thrown out in the second inning for mimicking an appeal call after striking out on a checked swing.

By Tuesday, the confrontation with Cavalli was immediate and ugly, and it left no one on either side untouched. What started as a heated exchange after a strikeout became a full bench-clearing incident—and an unusually punishing night for Boston, starting with the player at the center of it.

  1. I mean Cavalli said that “sit down boy” thing?? If that’s true then Contreras was already heated. Still tho helmet is crazy, like just don’t touch the guy.

  2. Wait so they got tossed AND the manager too? I swear this league never learns. Next thing you know every pitcher’s gonna start taunting and then someone throws a bat or whatever. Also “apologized” for the bat flip??? That’s not even related lol.

  3. Helmet throwing sparks brawl sounds like the earthquakes in Venezuela are causing sports anger or something. Like my cousin said, stress makes people lose control. But also why is Boston always involved? Feels like they pick fights for attention.
