Baltimore Ravens star Calais Campbell described his brother in words that left no room for doubt: he told the dispatcher that his brother was “mentally ill” and had been “diagnosed with schizophrenia.”.
The audio. obtained by TMZ Sports on Thursday. July 2. captures Calais. 39. asking for police to conduct a wellness check at Buckhead. the Atlanta neighborhood where their mother’s body was later found. Calais said his brother. identified in the reporting as Ciarre. drove their mother’s car—behavior he described as “very unusual” and something his brother “doesn’t drive” under normal circumstances.
Calais told the dispatcher he couldn’t reach their mother’s house. He said he tried “to jump the window” because he couldn’t get in and because he did not have the code to the garage door. He also said the situation was being complicated by what video appeared to show: he told the dispatcher that their mother had claimed she left. but that “the camera footage that my neighbor has showed she never left.”.
He then provided the dispatcher with a description of his mother and explained why he couldn’t access the home any other way.
Ciarre Campbell. also referred to as Calais’ brother. is charged with murder. aggravated assault and possession of a firearm or knife in connection with the death of their mom. 71-year-old Nateal Campbell. The charges are tied to her death. which authorities said was discovered after her body was found inside a townhome in Buckhead on Tuesday. June 30.
Nateal Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene with several cuts to her neck, WHSV reported.
During the same investigation, authorities described the home as one where someone had barricaded themselves inside. In a press release, authorities said an unidentified male had “barricaded himself inside the home.”
Lieutenant Christapher Butler, speaking to reporters, said there had been “calls back in April” related to the Buckhead residence and a “possible arson incident.” He added, “There have been some indications of possibly some mental health issues with an individual.”
The Ravens have also spoken publicly about the loss. In a statement. the team said. “We are incredibly saddened to learn about the passing of Calais Campbell’s mother. ” adding that it extended “deepest condolences and full support to Calais and his family during this difficult time. ” while asking the public to respect the family’s privacy as they grieve.
The Campbell family later released a separate statement that did not mention Ciarre being a suspect in Nateal’s death. “We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell,” the statement read. It continued: “While the details of her passing are still being investigated. we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father. her beloved Chuck. and in the arms of our Lord and Savior. Jesus Christ. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family.”.
Calais also signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract with the Ravens in May and announced in June that this would likely be his final season—details that now sit alongside the family tragedy that unfolded in the days leading up to her death.
