Caitlin Clark double-double powers Fever’s 89-78 surge

Caitlin Clark posted 21 points with 10 assists and seven rebounds as the Indiana Fever beat the Seattle Storm 89-78 on Sunday night.

INDIANAPOLIS — Caitlin Clark didn’t just run the offense for the Indiana Fever, she forced the pace and kept it. The star finished with 21 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds to guide Indiana to an 89-78 win over the Seattle Storm on Sunday night.

Clark’s stat line carried a historic weight: it was her 11th game with at least 20 points and 10 assists. the most such games in WNBA history.. Kelsey Mitchell and reserve Sophie Cunningham added 17 points apiece as the Fever improved to 2-2. winning at home for the first time after two straight home losses.

Indiana’s night also carried an injury uncertainty.. The Fever were without All-Star Aliyah Boston, who missed her first game in her four years as a pro.. Boston had played 275 consecutive games. including her four years at South Carolina. but she left Indiana’s previous game with a lower right leg injury and is listed day to day.

Seattle, meanwhile, leaned on Natisha Hiedeman, who scored 19 points to lead the Storm (1-3). Flau’jae Johnson added 14, reserve Zia Cook had 13 and Jade Melbourne scored 12.

The Fever seized control early. Indiana opened with a 15-0 run in the first quarter and led by as many as 17 points before going ahead 32-19 after one quarter. The Storm pulled the gap down to nine, but Indiana still built a 55-44 lead at the half, with Clark at 17 points by the break.

Seattle found a small opening in the third quarter when it held Clark to two free throws, both coming with less than a second to go. Even so, the Storm couldn’t slow Indiana’s scoring swing as the Fever outscored Seattle 22-14 in the period to move ahead 77-58.

By the fourth quarter, the lead swelled to 20. Indiana took advantage of Seattle’s lack of interior defense, producing a 50-30 advantage in points in the paint and limiting the Storm’s front court players to 17 points.

The schedule now turns quickly. The Storm head home for two games against Connecticut, the only team they have beaten, beginning Wednesday. The Fever return to action against Portland on Wednesday in the third game of a four-game homestand.

  1. I didn’t even realize she had 10 assists too, thought it was just scoring. Also Boston being day to day is kinda scary, like how does someone miss their first game after all those straight ones? Hope it’s nothing serious.

  2. So they’re saying this was the most games in WNBA history with 20+ and 10 assists? But didn’t they say she forced pace and kept it… like wouldn’t that mean they barely let Seattle do anything? Kinda confused how that relates to the injury though, because I heard Boston was “out” on some other app.

  3. That 15-0 run in the first quarter was wild, felt like the game was over before it started. And 50-30 in the paint? I swear the Storm forgot how to guard inside. Also Clark holding them off, 2 free throws in the third with less than a second left… like that stat is random but it makes her look even more unstoppable.
