Caitlin Clark chases WNBA assists-per-game milestone Thursday

Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever return on Thursday at 10 p.m. ET against the Golden State Valkyries on Prime Video, entering the matchup at 4-2. Clark is three assists away from becoming the WNBA’s all-time assists-per-game leader if she reaches the league

Indiana Fever fans will get their first look again at Caitlin Clark after a short pause — and this time, the clock could matter as much as the scoreboard.

The Fever last played on Friday night against the Golden State Valkyries. They return Thursday when the teams meet again at 10 p.m. ET on Prime Video, with both sides entering at 4-2 overall.

For Clark, the night has the feel of a potential breakthrough. Indiana Fever writer Robin Lundberg says the WNBA’s all-time assists-per-game leader list uses a minimum threshold of 500 career season assists to qualify. With three more assists against the Valkyries. Clark is on the verge of being listed as the all-time leader in assists per game.

Last season, Clark’s pace was interrupted by injury. She only appeared in 13 games after a season-ending groin injury, but she played in every game as a rookie in 2024. Her career average entering Thursday stands at 8.6 assists per game.

Even with that history, her season start has been consistent in a way that stands out. Clark holds the record for the most games in WNBA history with 20-plus points and 10-plus assists — 12. And across her first five appearances this year. after missing one game last week due to back soreness. she has logged at least 20 points and five assists in every outing.

The numbers add up quickly around Thursday’s matchup: Clark is averaging 23.8 points, 9.0 assists, 4.4 rebounds, 1.0 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game. She’s shooting 43.2% from the field, 34.8% from three-point range, and 96.4% from the free-throw line.

That’s why Thursday feels different. Indiana’s next game is just another regular-season matchup on paper — until it isn’t, because three assists can change a franchise star’s place in league history.

As the Fever and Valkyries line up again, Clark doesn’t just have to create chances. She has to find enough of them — exactly three, by Lundberg’s threshold logic — to turn a near-miss into a record.

  1. I swear these milestones are always “three away” like it’s automatically gonna happen lol. Also why is it on Prime Video, I don’t even have that.

  2. Wait isn’t the record like total assists, not assists per game? I’m confused… 500 career season assists sounds made up. But if she’s only got 8.6 a game usually then 3 more in one game won’t suddenly make her leader right?

  3. Injuries always mess with people and then they come back and suddenly it’s a “breakthrough.” Not saying it won’t happen, but back soreness, groin injury, and now she’s gonna drop 23+ points and 9 assists like it’s nothing? Also 4-2 sounds good but I don’t know what the Valkyries are even doing, are they good or is Indiana just hot right now?
