When the Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast began posting on their feeds, the grief didn’t come in abstractions—it came in names, memories, and the kind of direct love that only longtime teammates can offer.

June 5. in a statement that said: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our extraordinary father. Anthony Head.” His two daughters. Emily and Daisy. added that he “passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia. surrounded by his family.”.
For the people who worked alongside Head on the hit series from 1997 to 2003. the loss landed as the latest in a run of painful reminders that “the Buffy family” is now being tested again and again. Head’s death came after Nicholas Brendon died in March and Michelle Trachtenberg passed away in February 2025.
David Boreanaz, who played Angel, honored Head by sharing the death announcement on his Instagram Story. Boreanaz wrote “RIP,” alongside a praying hand emoji, and added that Head “He was so kind and generous of a soul.”
Eliza Dushku, who portrayed the slayer Faith, posted via her Instagram Story on Friday. Using the name “Tony H,” she wrote, “For every scene & time shared, I give thanks. Rest in love and peace, kind sir. A dear one.”
Sarah Michelle Gellar, Buffy herself, returned to a line from the show as she paid tribute to her TV mentor. She quoted “‘Tell Giles I figured it out and I’m OK.’ Well I don’t have it figured out and I’m not OK. ” and wrote. “But I know I’m the lucky one because I knew you.” She also shared a series of photos from filming. including images with Seth Green and Head’s two daughters. Daisy and Emily. “Thank you to Daisy and Emily who not only shared their dad with me, but with the world,” Gellar added.
James Marsters, who played Spike, wrote via Instagram: “There’s a hole in the World. Anthony Head has passed on from us.” He described Head as “an unflaggingly kind and steady presence on the set of Buffy. ” and called him “the best actor in the cast.” Marsters continued: “He was the best of us. I was lucky to have known, and learned from him. He left the world a better place for his presence. Thank you Tony for all you gave.”.
Emma Caulfield. who portrayed Anya. shared a throwback photo on Instagram and recalled a day she spent with Head in 2011 in London. “This was taken on the London Underground in 2011,” she wrote. You were so loved. Impossible to caption. You are so missed. ❤️ ❤️❤️❤️ rest in peace with your beautiful Sarah-Emma.”.
Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia Chase, offered one of the most detailed tributes, posting a lengthy statement on Friday. She said Head “brought life to a character who. for so many. was the father figure they needed but didn’t have at home. ” adding that fans “are surely grieving.” Carpenter acknowledged she “was not as close to Tony as some of the others from the cast were. ” but said the loss still hit her deeply. with her heart “truly” with her fellow castmates and Head’s family.
Carpenter also spoke directly to the daughters, Emily and Daisy. “I am especially sorry for the tremendous loss his daughters. Emily and Daisy. are enduring. ” she wrote. adding that they were “just darling little girls” when she met them and that she believed they now carry their parents’ “love. kindness. and commitment to others.” She called Head “an icon” and shared an anecdote from their first meeting in the production office—she remembered his “hippie-vibe demeanor. with a touch of punk-rock flair. ” including “an earring. Converse high-tops. and a pair of loose-fitting. boldly striped pants. ” saying “There wasn’t a trace of Giles to be found.”.
Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow Rosenberg, described the grief as something physical. “The cut so deep I fear it can never heal,” she wrote via Instagram on Saturday, June 6. She added, “Oh Tonal…I am so grateful to have had you in my life!. I want to say a million wonderful things about you and yet I can’t seem to find the words that would do you justice. ” before saying. “I love you so much and will miss you forever. RIP.” Gellar responded in support, writing, “He loved you so dearly Aly.”.
The sequence of tributes paints the same picture from different corners: Head’s influence wasn’t only in the character he played from 1997 to 2003. but in the way castmates remembered him off-screen—kind. steady. and impossible to replace. And for Daisy and Emily. the tributes also carry an unmistakable weight. rooted in their family’s message that he died peacefully. surrounded by the people who loved him most.

Pneumonia is such a brutal way to go, I’m so sorry.
So wait Anthony Head from Buffy died at 72? I thought he was way older like 80. Also “complications” sounds like maybe it was something else but they just say pneumonia…
This is literally the third Buffy person I’ve seen pass lately. It’s wild. I didn’t know David Boreanaz posted it on IG already but yeah I guess everyone’s doing condolences now. Poor family though, surrounded by family or whatever doesn’t make it any easier.
Nicholas Brendon died in March and then Michelle Trachtenberg in Feb 2025… like what, is there some curse with the show? Or was it just bad luck or Hollywood partying and getting sick? Either way Rupert Giles was my favorite so I’m sad. Also the article says “Anthony Stewart Head” but people keep calling him Tony H—same guy right? I’m getting confused.
