Buckingham Palace guard change suspended amid lethal heat

Britain’s extreme heat has halted daily ceremonial guard changes at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle for the rest of the week, with temperatures forecast to top 39°C. King Charles continues official duties, while schools across England and Wales close and

The heat broke through the palace schedule on Wednesday, forcing London’s most famous military handover to pause. For the rest of the week. the traditional Changing of the Guard ceremonies at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle have been suspended as Britain battles an extreme high-temperature warning.

The warning is severe: the national weather service says temperatures could rise above 39° C (102.2° F), and a red alert is rare. The national weather service cited a risk to life even for healthy people.

The Household Division. which oversees the British Army’s ceremonial duties. said the day-to-day performances will be altered to keep pace with the forecast. In a statement. it said the “daily Ceremonial Operations will be slightly changed to take the hot weather into account. ” adding there would be no ceremonial guard changes at Windsor Castle or Buckingham Palace on Wednesday or Thursday.

The decision lands in one of the busiest tourist stretches of the year. As many spectators flock to royal residences to watch the historic military handover. the suspension removes a centerpiece of summer travel plans—and it arrives as the country’s records are under pressure. The Met Office expects the United Kingdom’s maximum June temperature record to be broken this week.

The impact is not limited to crowds waiting behind barriers. Authorities say soaring temperatures could significantly affect public health and public transport networks.

King Charles kept going through the heat

While the guard changes were paused, King Charles III continued official duties during the punishing weather. On Wednesday, June 24, he welcomed the Afghan national women’s cricket team at Clarence House—the official London residence he shares with Queen Camilla.

A video shared on the royal family’s X account showed the monarch wearing a beige suit and posing for photographs outside in the shade.

In Britain, where air conditioning is limited, the blistering temperatures are already forcing daily disruption far beyond the palace gates. The heat has driven more than 1,000 schools across England and Wales to close.

The ceremony itself depends on heavy gear and exposed waits

The Changing of the Guard is known for its pageantry as much as its tradition. Soldiers wear heavy ceremonial uniforms and bearskin hats made from real bear skin. a distinctive feature designed to make troops appear taller and more intimidating. During the change, the military band plays while the on-duty guard is replaced by the New Guard.

In normal conditions, the Household Troops have patrolled outside Buckingham Palace since Queen Victoria made it her official residence in 1837. But this is not the first time the schedule has been interrupted.

The Household Division halted the Changing of the Guard in March 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic, and that suspension lasted for 18 months.

Safety comes first—even if the pause disappoints

This week’s change comes with an admission that the adjustment won’t sit well with everyone. The Household Division acknowledged the decision “may be disappointing” for people hoping to see the operations in full. but said the safety of the public. soldiers. and the military working horses is paramount.

It said soldiers would continue to guard the residences but would be moved to shadier locations and changed “more frequently.”

For tourists and residents, the message is simple: when the weather becomes dangerous enough to threaten even healthy lives, tradition has to step aside. The palace can’t ignore the forecast—and this week, it won’t.

  1. Wait I thought Buckingham Palace would have, like, air conditioning or something. 39C and they’re just out there anyway? Good on them for stopping, but tourists are gonna be mad.

  2. This is what happens when people say climate change is fake. Like, if it can break the schedule then it’s bad. Also Windsor and Buckingham are right next to each other, why not just do it somewhere else? I don’t get it. Wouldn’t the guards just rotate out faster?

  3. Kinda wild King Charles kept doing duties but the guard changes got paused. Maybe they just didn’t want the cameras to show the guards melting? Or they needed more time to reschedule for the red alert thing. I saw another post say “schools closed” so I assumed the whole palace closed too, but nope. Either way, poor people out in that heat, I’m surprised it’s only for a couple days.
