Could one of the NFL’s top interior defensive linemen be on the move during training camp?
According to multiple reports, Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive lineman Vita Vea has requested a trade. Vea, the two-time Pro Bowler, has spent the entirety of his eight-year career in Tampa Bay and is entering the final season of a four-year, $71 million contract he signed in January 2022.
The hulking Vea has been a stalwart up front since he was selected in the first round (No. 12 overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft.
An imposing figure in the middle of Todd Bowles’ defense, Vea has tallied 35 sacks across 117 games played in his career, an impressive mark for an interior defensive lineman.
Vea is coming off a season during which he accounted for 51 total pressures, per Pro Football Focus, good for 12th in the NFL among interior defensive lineman. He tallied 4½ sacks.
The Buccaneers are also dealing with the contract situation for quarterback Baker Mayfield, who also will hit free agency following the 2026 season.
Vea signed a four-year, $71 million contract with the Buccaneers in January 2022, tying him to Tampa Bay through the 2026 season.
The deal included $33.9 million in guaranteed money.
