Bruins and Mammoth eye JJ Peterka draft-night upgrade

Bruins Mammoth – Boston and Utah are working on a deal that could bring winger JJ Peterka to the Bruins ahead of Friday night’s first round. The trade isn’t done yet, but it would be a significant move toward upgrading Boston’s top-six.
When Friday night’s first round begins, the Boston Bruins want to feel the momentum early—before the draft clock forces everyone to wait. The trade buzz centers on winger JJ Peterka, with the Bruins and Utah Mammoth working on a deal that could reshape Boston’s top-six.
It isn’t finalized. Still, the framework is there, and the timing matters: the Bruins currently hold the 23rd-overall pick in Friday night’s first round. A jump in talent at that moment—without waiting for later rounds—would be the kind of early draft-night upgrade teams circle for weeks.
Peterka’s path to Utah began nearly exactly a year ago. On June 25, 2025, he was traded to the Mammoth in a deal that sent defenseman Michael Kesselring and winger Josh Doan to the Buffalo Sabres. For Buffalo, it paid off quickly, and not in a vague way.
Doan’s 2025-26 season turned into a breakout: he was promoted into a premier role and rewarded with a 25-goal. 52-point campaign. Peterka matched the 25-goal number as well, but his production lagged in points—he reached 47 instead of 52. Part of that difference came with his role. In Utah, Peterka averaged 16 minutes a night, after recording 18 minutes per game during his 68-point run with Buffalo in 2024-25.
This season also marked the end of Peterka’s latest scoring climb, a rise that began in earlier years and steadily gathered steam. He had 32 points in his rookie 2022-23 season, then jumped to 50 points in his sophomore year. Even with that momentum fading this time, there were bright spots.
Peterka finished with a 15.7 shooting percentage, 0.1 percent higher than the mark he posted in what was described as a career-year last season. He also appears positioned to keep challenging for 25 goals each season. A change in scenery could be what unlocks more consistent playmaking as well.
For the Bruins. that combination—proven goal-scoring with a reputation for speed—fits the kind of top-six need that can’t be solved by simply drafting and hoping. If the Bruins can convert the talks into a real deal before the draft narrows the options. it would be more than a roster tweak. It would be a calculated move aimed straight at Boston’s immediate window.
Boston Bruins Utah Mammoth JJ Peterka draft night trade 23rd-overall pick Michael Kesselring Josh Doan
So are the Bruins trading the 23rd pick or just “talking” about it? Either way seems kinda risky.
I don’t even get it, like Peterka already scored 25 goals right? Why wait until draft night, just do it lol. Also Utah Mammoth?? what even is that name.
They said his points dropped from 52 to 47 but they still want him for top-six?? That’s backwards to me. Sounds like a whole deal to fix speed only, not scoring. And if they’re trading off Kesselring/Doan?? idk seems like Buffalo made out.
Every year Bruins fans get hyped for a “framework” trade and then it falls apart. But 23rd overall first round and “momentum early” like who wrote this 😂 Also the article mentions shooting percentage like that automatically means playmaking will magically show up. Watch them draft someone instead and then Peterka goes on another 25-goal tear with Utah.
