Browns keep QB battle open as Shedeur grows
Browns keep – Todd Monken says the Browns’ quarterback competition will run into training camp, while GM Andrew Berry points to a standout offseason stretch from second-year QB Shedeur Sanders and the team’s ongoing search for a clear franchise answer at QB1.
For the Browns, the quarterback question isn’t getting answered on a timetable. Head coach Todd Monken told reporters last week that the competition will extend into training camp, and he’s not ready to name a starter yet.
That uncertainty now sits alongside a different kind of progress: second-year quarterback Shedeur Sanders has made enough strides through Cleveland’s offseason program that General Manager Andrew Berry is publicly excited about what comes next. Late last week, Berry spoke in an interview with 92.3 The Fan, saying Sanders had “an excellent spring.”.
Berry linked the improvement to the learning curve that comes with being a rookie quarterback and then getting a real runway to refine details. “The past eight-to-10 weeks — and really. probably beyond that. probably the past six months. with as a rookie player in particular a quarterback. you learn a lot your first year. ” Berry said. He added that the process becomes even more meaningful when a player isn’t starting a full season. because the adjustments and education can take shape across the year rather than only during game-week pressure. “And especially if you don’t start a full season … and you go through the year. adjustment going into the NFL. and then you get a chance to catch your breath and say. here are the things that we need to work on. here are the things I need to learn. ” Berry said.
In Berry’s telling, that work began early. “And I think he did a phenomenal job this offseason,” he said. Berry described the foundation as starting “in January and February. ” and said the momentum carried into “real practices in may. ” where Sanders’ growth accelerated. “So. we’re all very excited to see Shedeur’s fall camp. preseason. things of that nature when we get into padded situations. live situations. less scripted. ” Berry said. “But his growth has truly been phenomenal.”.
The Browns’ search for a franchise quarterback hasn’t been short or simple. and the stakes are clear: between Sanders and Deshaun Watson. one will need to emerge as QB1 as Cleveland moves into its first season under Monken. What Berry is describing won’t change the timing of the decision on its own. but it does raise the question the franchise has been chasing—whether Sanders’ offseason development can show up when the reps get heavier and the look gets less scripted in the padded. live work of fall camp and preseason.
If the growth he cites can translate into performance on the field, it would be a meaningful shift for a team that’s been constantly looking for its long-term answer under center—one that the coaching staff still plans to earn, not announce, ahead of the season.
