Broncos’ Jonathon Cooper to face felony assault charges

Denver Broncos edge rusher Jonathon Cooper faces new charges after a second arrest this week, including a felony allegation tied to the earlier domestic violence case, with court proceedings expected to begin Friday, June 12.

A second arrest in a week has put Denver Broncos edge rusher Jonathon Cooper on a new track in court.

Cooper was arrested Thursday, June 11, according to reporting from 9 News in Denver and NFL Media. Both outlets said he faces four new charges stemming from that latest arrest: two domestic violence counts. one harassment count involving repeated telephone calls. and one violation of a protection order tied to his initial arrest on Thursday. June 4. He is expected to appear in court on Friday, June 12.

The timeline began June 4. when Parker Police initially arrested Cooper on suspicion of domestic violence and one count of criminal mischief. jail records show. He was released on Friday, June 5, on a personal recognizance bond. In court on Monday, June 8, Cooper pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor domestic violence charges.

Court records filed on Wednesday. June 10. and obtained by USA TODAY Sports show Cooper is also facing two additional assault charges tied to the June 4 arrest. One is a felony charge for second-degree assault by strangulation. The other is a misdemeanor charge for third-degree assault for “unlawfully, and knowingly or recklessly, caus[ing] bodily injury.”.

The legal schedule now looks set. Both 9 News and ESPN reported that Cooper has a motions hearing set for July 6, and a potential jury trial date set for July 22.

The day of the announcement landed right in the middle of the Broncos’ offseason rhythm. Denver completed its final day of organized team activities (OTAs) on June 11. The team is scheduled to begin its three-day mandatory minicamp next Tuesday. June 16. and Broncos training camp is scheduled to begin in late July.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton addressed the situation on June 11. saying the league has taken on the responsibility for disciplinary action after what he described as a long visit with “Coop.” “We had a long visit with ‘Coop. ‘ and now the process plays out. The league obviously will be very much involved in that. We’ll stay abreast, but much like you all. I think that’s where it’s at. We just go from there.”.

There is also the question of how this case intersects with a contract that was meant to anchor Denver’s defense. Cooper signed a four-year, $60 million contract extension with the Broncos in November 2024.

The sequence is now clear: the June 4 arrest. the June 11 second arrest. the expanded set of allegations described in court filings and police-related reporting. and a court process that is set to move quickly starting Friday. June 12. After that. the next markers—July 6 for a motions hearing and July 22 for a potential jury trial—will determine what happens next as the Broncos continue through minicamp and look ahead to training camp.
