By Wednesday night, Los Angeles had the kind of injury update that changes a week’s worth of planning. Sparks forward Cameron Brink is out indefinitely after suffering a left ankle sprain Monday against the Golden State Valkyries.
Sparks coach Lynne Roberts spoke to the situation after Wednesday’s action, calling the sprain significant and offering a blunt timeline. “It’s a good ankle sprain,” Roberts said Wednesday night. “I don’t anticipate her being back (soon).”
Brink—picked No. 2 overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft—has been a defensive force this season. Through 14 games, she is averaging 9.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks. Her medical history also looms in how the team will manage her return. Brink tore the ACL in her left knee her rookie year and has played 48 games across three seasons in the league.
With Brink sidelined, the Sparks will look to second-year center Sania Feagin to earn more minutes. Feagin missed six games earlier in the season because of a leg injury, but she is back and healthy.
Roberts framed Feagin’s preparation around a season rhythm that hasn’t always allowed for full work. “It’s hard when we’re not practicing much. We’ve had a stretch where it’s just been travel-game, travel-game, travel-game. So it’s hard for any of those guys,” Roberts said. “But she’s just been staying ready. getting extra work in and here we go … we need her to step up.”.
The Sparks’ injury list doesn’t stop there. Kelsey Plum is also nursing an ankle sprain and sat out on Wednesday in a loss to the Minnesota Lynx.
The timing couldn’t be tougher for a team that has struggled to find consistency. Los Angeles sits at 7-8 and has lost five of its past eight games.
On the schedule, the next test arrives quickly: the Sparks play the New York Liberty on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.
