Brickbat: The Davie License Plate Incident

It sounds like a total headache, honestly. A guy named Demarquize Dawson was driving a rental car through Davie, Florida, when he got pulled over by the local police. The reason? A license plate frame that covered the first ‘S’ in ‘Sunshine State.’ That was enough to put him in jail for the night. Imagine being booked for a piece of plastic—well, maybe that’s oversimplifying it, but still.

After the arrest, the situation spiraled. Dawson reportedly ended up in the hospital dealing with a panic attack. It’s the kind of thing that makes you wonder what’s actually happening on the roads these days. Or maybe just how strict enforcement is getting, because honestly, spending a night in a cell over a slogan seems pretty extreme even by strict standards.

Wait, here is the kicker: the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles eventually stepped in to clear things up. They stated that frames are totally fine as long as you can read the numbers, the letters, and the registration sticker is visible. And of course, the officer needs to be able to identify the state. Since all that was visible, Dawson’s plate didn’t actually break any laws.

I can still smell the stale coffee and industrial cleaner of a typical precinct holding room just thinking about his night.

Anyway, the Davie Police Department eventually walked it back. They acknowledged the confusion, blaming some unclear legal wording, but admitted the arrest shouldn’t have happened. They even issued a public apology. It’s good they apologized, I guess, but it’s a bit late for Dawson’s night behind bars, isn’t it?

It’s just strange how these things happen. One minute you’re driving a rental, the next you’re in a hospital bed because of a frame. The law, or the interpretation of it, can be a weird thing. Hopefully, they’ve cleared up the confusion for everyone else now.
