Brendan Sorsby injunction hearing set for June 1

Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s request for a preliminary injunction will be heard on June 1 at 10:00 a.m. ET. His lawyers asked for a June 15 hearing, citing a June 22 deadline tied to the NFL’s supplemental draft.

Brendan Sorsby’s fight isn’t waiting for the calendar to slow down.

A hearing on Sorsby’s request for a preliminary injunction has been scheduled for June 1 at 10:00 a.m. ET. The timing comes after paperwork filed on Monday in which Sorsby’s lawyers asked the court to hold the hearing on June 15. pointing to a June 22 deadline for applying to the NFL’s supplemental draft.

The case has been assigned to retired Tarrant County senior judge Kenneth C. Curry. His retirement matters because it removes the usual incentive that a sitting state-court judge might have to issue a ruling favorable to a local institution. The judge’s ties also shift the backdrop: Curry is from Tarrant County rather than Lubbock County. which softens the possibility of home-court advantage.

Curry’s education includes an undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Arlington and a law degree from the University of Houston. The previous judge in the case, Phillip Hays, earned both his undergraduate degree and his law degree from Texas Tech.

That difference may shape how the case is received procedurally, even if the fight between Sorsby and the NCAA plays out as it has to. If the NCAA doesn’t get the outcome it wants, it will still have reasons to complain—just one fewer angle tied directly to where the prior judge studied.
