Brandon Aiyuk videos clash with 49ers release timeline

Brandon Aiyuk keeps putting his next move on social media, but the clock for the 49ers doesn’t seem to be moving with him.

Aiyuk has posted more videos tied to his status with the 49ers and his desire to play for the Commanders. In the latest run of videos in his Instagram story—an account that currently is empty—Aiyuk launched verbal assaults against 49ers general manager John Lynch. 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan. and Aiyuk’s agent of record. Ryan Williams. The message wasn’t subtle: he’s challenging people inside the building while signaling where he wants to end up.

He also laid out a hard deadline for his presence in Santa Clara. Aiyuk vowed he won’t return to the 49ers’ facility until October 19, the day the Commanders play at Levi’s Stadium.

But the legal and league mechanics don’t bend to video timelines. Aiyuk has not officially fired Williams, even though he has insisted in multiple videos posted since Friday that he has. He also has not petitioned the league for reinstatement from the reserve/left squad list. Until he takes that step. he can’t force the 49ers to release him simply by showing up for training camp.

The 49ers, for their part, have shown no inclination to release him from the reserve/left squad list. In theory, they could move him out of it, but they haven’t.

The mismatch is stark: Aiyuk is trying to press the situation forward publicly, while his ability to compel a change depends on paperwork and participation. Unless the 49ers release him, nothing will change until Aiyuk files a petition for reinstatement—and until he shows up for training camp.

Even the team’s incentives point the other way. If the 49ers keep him away from work and he ends up returning later, they likely won’t want him to work out or practice. A season-ending injury would put them on the hook for more than $26 million in 2026 compensation that currently is not guaranteed.

So the next steps aren’t about more videos. Instead of posting, the storyline suggests Aiyuk needs to file what the league recognizes. If he wants to fire his agent. he needs to submit the form with the NFL Players Association that ends the relationship. And if he wants his football future to move beyond the current roster status. he needs to file a petition for reinstatement.

For now, Aiyuk’s message is clear—he wants the Commanders—and his deadline is set for October 19. The question is whether the league process will ever line up with the plan he keeps broadcasting.

  1. Wait I thought he said he fired his agent already? But then article says he didnt like… how can both be true lol. Also Oct 19 being when Commanders play at Levi’s seems kinda convenient timing.

  2. This is why players shouldn’t be posting all this stuff. If he wants out just file the paperwork, not attack John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan like that’s gonna speed up “release timeline.” And what is up with the whole reserve/left list thing, sounds made up.

  3. Honestly I think the 49ers should just release him if he’s already showing up in videos saying he won’t come back til Oct 19. Like if he’s gonna be petty then fine, let him go to Washington. Also $26 million comp thing?? That’s why teams be dragging people through the mud. It’s all about money and paperwork, not football.
