Brandon Aiyuk demands 49ers release him, then escalates

Brandon Aiyuk posted a blunt Instagram message calling on the San Francisco 49ers to release him, while continuing a growing public stand-off that includes insults aimed at the franchise and a promise he won’t return—except for an Oct. 19 Monday Night Football

Brandon Aiyuk’s latest message wasn’t delivered in a negotiation room or a team facility. On Saturday, June 27, the 28-year-old wide receiver used an Instagram story mirror selfie—shot from the waist down—with a caption that left little room for interpretation.

“Take me off yo bum a– team,” Aiyuk wrote, punctuating the demand with double exclamation emojis. He followed with, “Tf is the hold up?”

In the post, Aiyuk didn’t name the San Francisco 49ers directly. But the reference was unmistakable, tied to a falling out that built during the 2025 NFL season. And as the standoff has stretched, the frustration has only sharpened.

The dispute has roots in the timing and terms of his relationship with the team. The 49ers voided the guaranteed money in Aiyuk’s contract ahead of the 2026 season amid the parties’ disagreement. Earlier in the 2026 offseason. general manager John Lynch told reporters that Aiyuk had likely played his last snap for the organization. Still, the team has not moved on from Aiyuk—an outcome that Aiyuk has not taken quietly.

Aiyuk’s public criticism has spilled across multiple social media posts and videos. In those messages. he has called the 49ers “stupid” and said he wants to join his college teammate Jayden Daniels on the Washington Commanders. He also posted a visual meant to symbolize money he believes the 49ers already paid him—throwing wads of cash onto the floor of his closet.

As the tone has escalated, Aiyuk has also changed how he’s handling his side of the business. In a recent series of posts that included a three-and-a-half minute video posted to YouTube, he revealed that he had parted ways with his agent and that he is currently representing himself.

Part of the newest stretch of comments appears aimed beyond the front office into coaching as well. Aiyuk implied coach Kyle Shanahan has “the temperament of a (expletive) toddler,” without using Shanahan’s name. He also suggested his dispute with leadership continues to run hot. even as Lynch previously indicated a likely end to his time in San Francisco.

The question now is whether either side can slow the momentum before it reaches the field. Aiyuk ended his latest rant with another declaration about his relationship to the organization.

“We is not cool,” Aiyuk said. “We won’t be cool, and I will never be stepping in that building.” He added a single exception: he noted the only time he would walk back into the facility would be Oct. 19, when the 49ers host the Commanders in a “Monday Night Football” contest.

That date—Oct. 19—now sits like a hard deadline in the middle of an unresolved story. The 49ers may have already signaled where they think things are headed, but Aiyuk’s posts suggest he’s still fighting for leverage in the only place he seems to have control right now: the public spotlight.

  1. Wait so he wants out but also says he’ll only come back for some Oct 19 game? That sounds kinda messed up honestly. Like what if they just bench him then?

  2. I don’t even get it. If they voided the guaranteed money, then he should’ve been gone already? Sounds like both sides are petty. Also why is he calling them stupid like that’s gonna make someone trade for him lol.

  3. Instagram stories always make it worse. He’s like ‘take me off’ and then dropping random stuff about Jayden Daniels on the Commanders?? I feel like this is more about money than football, but then he’s still promising to show up for Monday Night Football like it’s a movie scene. If the 49ers already paid him (or whatever the cash closet post is), then why is he still mad? Makes no sense.
