Tambling’s legacy at Chelsea was built on numbers that lasted for years. He scored 202 goals in 370 appearances from 1959 to 1970. a tally that remained the club’s record until 2013. when Frank Lampard surpassed it. The scale of what he achieved became part of the club’s identity—something later generations grew up hearing about before they ever saw it.
He debuted for Chelsea at 17 in 1959 and went on to play a central role in the club’s 1965 League Cup win. scoring against Leicester in the final. In 1966, he also delivered what became a Chelsea record: five goals in a single match against Aston Villa. His name also appeared in other colours of the English game. with spells at Crystal Palace. and he earned three international caps for England.
After settling in Cork, Ireland, Tambling turned his focus to management. He managed Cork Celtic, Cork City and Crosshaven, staying close to the sport that had shaped his life.
In recent years, Britain’s Press Association said Tambling had been diagnosed with dementia. For many who knew him, that diagnosis only added another layer to a life remembered for both football and character.
