Blue Jays select Brendan Cellucci to roster vs. Rays, DFA Matt Waldron

Left-handed pitcher Brendan Cellucci was selected to the major-league roster and will be active Wednesday night vs. the Tampa Bay Rays, the team announced.

In a corresponding move, the Blue Jays designated righty Matt Waldron for assignment.

Cellucci, 28, is in line to make his MLB debut should he take the mound with the Blue Jays. The 12th-round pick by the Boston Red Sox in 2019 has spent the 2026 season split between double- and triple-A, making 39 appearances with the Buffalo Bisons. Celluci has held a 3.89 ERA in that span, striking out 44 batters over 44.0 innings of work.

As for Waldron, he’s made four appearances for Toronto since being selected off waivers from the San Diego Padres in early August. The 29-year-old has maintained a 10.38 ERA and three strikeouts over 4.1 innings. His last appearance came in the Blue Jays’ win over the Rays on Tuesday, giving up two earned runs over two innings pitched.

The Blue Jays’ chase for a wild-card spot continues on Wednesday, entering the game just 0.5 games back of the Texas Rangers. Toronto is 7-3 in its last 10 games and will put Max Scherzer on the bump to start. Catch first pitch between the AL East rivals at 6:40 p.m. ET / 3:40 p.m. PT on Sportsnet or Sportsnet+.
