Blue Jays return Lukes, demote Schneider to Triple-A

Blue Jays – Toronto activated Nathan Lukes from the injured list after a hamstring injury sidelined him since April 24, while sending Davis Schneider to Triple-A after a slow start at the plate.

The Blue Jays’ offense gets a jolt of familiarity on Monday: Nathan Lukes is back from the injured list. activated after a hamstring injury kept him sidelined since April 24. Toronto has been searching for consistent production. and Lukes’ return comes with the added pressure of having just seen a four-game win streak end on Sunday.

Lukes hasn’t played since April 24. Before the hamstring issue, he had been one of Toronto’s hottest hitters, collecting 11 hits in his final 21 at-bats after working through a case of vertigo. Now, at 31 years old, he brings a line of .250/.286/.327 through 20 games, along with eight RBIs.

Last season, Lukes did more than survive — he swung. Through 135 games, he posted a .255/.323/.407 slash line with 12 home runs and 65 RBIs. Those numbers are a reminder of what Toronto is hoping to unlock again as the lineup tries to find its footing.

But the move to activate Lukes comes at a cost for Davis Schneider. The Blue Jays sent the right-handed-hitting Schneider to Triple-A after his first two months with the bat produced a .127 average, with nine hits and 17 walks. Schneider has one home run and eight RBIs.

Toronto’s roster shuffle also carries a quieter consequence: the demotion means left-hander Yohendrick Piñango will remain on the MLB roster despite Lukes returning. Piñango, 24, has impressed in his rookie season, hitting .313 with a .352 on-base percentage, one home run, and 10 RBIs in 23 games.

That choice matters because the Blue Jays have been struggling for offense, and every spot on the roster has to earn its place. With Lukes activated and Schneider moved down, Piñango’s continued presence becomes part of the answer — at least for now — as Toronto tries to steady the bats.

The timing is immediate. The Blue Jays, whose four-game win streak ended Sunday, return to action Monday to open a three-game series at home against the Miami Marlins. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT.
