Victoria promises a summer finish for Blanshard work

Attempting to keep promises to finish this summer, the city says it’s close to construction completion on a busy thoroughfare in Victoria. The latest batch of Blanshard Street upgrades – the stretch from Caledonia Avenue to Bay Street – will see signage and bollard installation and road painting in the first two weeks of June. While it will mean lane closures, the city says it’s nearly finished the project slated to be done this summer. Work started in January on the multi-modal street upgrades on
Blanshard from Caledonia Avenue to Kings Road, connecting to the most recently finished improvements south of Caledonia. The full project includes road paving and maintenance, protected bike lanes, accessibility improvements and a new traffic signal at Blanshard and Pembroke Street. The upgrades align with priorities and directions laid out in the city’s long-term transportation plan while addressing road maintenance needs. This work also aligns with Victoria’s priorities to expand the AAA bike and roll network and improve the moving experience of pedestrians, mobility device users
and the public generally. Those goals are also at the root of work on Cook Street, where residents can expect lane closures, traffic disruptions, detours, temporary parking restrictions, construction noise, dust and odours now through fall. Work also continues on a nearby block of Quadra Street, where the city is replacing a water main. Find a roundup of major roadwork projects online at victoria.ca. Do you have a story tip? So they’re saying “close to completion” but it’s always lane closures every year it feels like.
First two weeks of June for signage/bollards/painting… cool cool. I just hope drivers don’t start treating Blanshard like it’s a racetrack with the new lanes.
Wait I thought this was the project where they added like that new traffic light at Pembroke and Blanshard? But also they said Cook Street is still going until fall… so which one is actually done this summer, the whole street or just random sections?
“Nearly finished the project slated to be done this summer” sounds like every contractor ever lol. Meanwhile I got stuck in detours on Cook and the dust was ridiculous. Also the water main on Quadra… like why can’t they just do it all at once and be done? I’ll check victoria.ca but knowing my luck it’ll still be closed next month too.
