Bill Maher tells Vance his 2028 vote is in play

Bill Maher didn’t exactly meet JD Vance in the middle when the conversation turned to the 2028 presidential election.
During Friday’s episode of “Real Time With Bill Maher,” the longtime host told the vice president that his vote is “in play,” and he made it sound conditional—on where the parties are headed and, especially, on what they say about elections.
Maher opened with a complaint about what he sees spreading through the Democratic Party. He bemoaned the rise of Democratic Socialism within the Democratic Party. saying the direction of the party was turning him away from the left altogether. “Like. if this is where the Democratic Party is going. where this Democratic Socialist. this obsession with Israel. with the Jew hating. with they don’t believe in capitalism. no prisons. ” Maher told Vance. before delivering the line that reframed the stakes for the rest of the exchange: “If this is where they’re going. my vote is in play.”.
Vance joked back that he “like[s] to hear that.” Maher quickly clarified he wasn’t promising anything new—insisting his vote has “actually always” been “in play.” He added that he doesn’t make his decision based on whether a candidate is “an R or a D.”
Maher then explained where he thinks the political future may already be leaning. “I actually always came to the conclusion that the Democrat was probably better and voted for them,” he said. He also pointed to the calendar. arguing “Trump can’t run again. and he’d be a little too exciting for me anyway.”.

The conversation tightened when Maher laid out his “deal breaker” for the Republican Party ahead of the midterms and the 2028 election. Under Trump, he argued, elections have effectively been reduced to one of two outcomes: “Either we win or they cheated. That s–t has to stop.”
For Maher. that means the person he supports can’t just win—they have to change the story being told about losing. He pushed Vance with a blunt demand: “Can you tell me you will do that?. Will you bring us back to the middle. at least on that. ” Maher said. urging a return to a different kind of political language—“Where we concede elections. Where it’s not either one of those two options.”.
Vance didn’t walk back the rhetoric Maher was challenging. He told the late-night host that he’s “probably” going to lose him anyway. “I don’t think that we should not concede elections, but I don’t think that’s what’s going on,” Vance said.
Vance tied his argument to the 2020 election. saying. “If you go back to the president’s core argument. he was making an argument about problems that existed in 2020.” He then expanded on the specific criticism he said he was reacting to: “The biggest criticism I had at the 2020 election is that you had technology companies that were quite literally censoring negative information about the left and promoting negative information about the right.”.
Vance framed it as a free speech issue. saying that if the First Amendment calls for “a free and open debate. ” then Americans should judge through that openness. But. he said. the 2020 election was “rigged” in the sense that “you had technology companies that were putting their thumb on the scale in a way that completely obliterated the real open exchange of ideas.”.
Maher didn’t sound convinced by that explanation. He replied that Vance would get “a big pat on the back when you got back to the White House.” By the time the exchange ended. the impression was hard to shake: Maher’s vote still isn’t locked—“Sounds like Maher’s vote is still in play. Rubio start working on your answer – STAT.”.

So Maher is just gonna switch votes whenever he gets annoyed? lol
Did he really say the whole election depends on what people say about elections? Sounds like every politician says that but ok. Also the Israel/Jew hating part is so loaded.
I don’t even get it, he’s saying his 2028 vote is in play like it’s a game show. Then he says he always voted Dem because they’re probably better?? That feels contradictory. And the part about “Trump can’t run again” like he just knows that for sure.
Maher talking about capitalism and “no prisons” like he’s the expert… meanwhile people are tired of both sides. Also why is he bringing up Israel stuff like it automatically means “Jew hating”? That’s a massive jump. Vance probably just smiled because it’s Bill Maher, not because it changes anything. 2028 is so far away too, this is just clickbait vibes.
