Illegal dumping call in Palmdale uncovers 800 pounds meth

A routine response to an illegal dumping complaint in Palmdale turned into a major meth bust, after code enforcement officers found a drug lab and more than 800 pounds of methamphetamine in a cargo container at a vacant lot near 110th Street East and Ave M-8.
For a city team answering an illegal dumping complaint, the job was supposed to end with paperwork and cleanup. Instead. officers arrived at a vacant lot in Palmdale this week and uncovered a cargo container packed with more than 800 pounds of methamphetamine—along with materials indicating an operation far beyond simple disposal.
The discovery came Wednesday when code enforcement officers responded to the complaint at the site near the corner of 110th Street East and Ave M-8 in the unincorporated area of Lake Los Angeles. about 36 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. Inside the container, authorities said they found what appeared to be a drug lab.
Alejandro Hernandez Gutierrez, 22, was arrested on suspicion of manufacturing a controlled substance, according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department news release.
City officials said the bust is among the most significant they’ve seen in recent years. Palmdale Mayor Eric Ohlsen called the outcome a direct result of code enforcement work that keeps neighborhoods safer. saying. “This case is a powerful example of the important work our code enforcement team does every day to protect Palmdale neighborhoods. What started as an illegal dumping investigation led to the removal of a massive amount of dangerous drugs from our community.”.
Once officers found the container, the call shifted quickly—from sanitation concerns to a coordinated public-safety response. Palmdale officials said the discovery became a joint operation involving the Sheriff’s Department, the L.A. County Department of Public Health, the L.A. County district attorney’s office, and the Los Angeles Police Department.
Authorities said the scene included not just the methamphetamine itself, but materials and photos suggesting multiple stages of narcotics production.
In a statement, Sheriff’s narcotics bureau Capt. Bobby Dean said the case underscored how quickly an everyday response can transform into something far more dangerous. “This investigation demonstrates how what initially appeared to be a routine call for service quickly evolved into the discovery of a sophisticated criminal enterprise capable of producing and distributing large quantities of methamphetamine. ” Dean said. “It also highlights the unpredictable and potentially life-threatening hazards law enforcement personnel encounter while protecting the public.”.
The Sheriff’s Department has assumed the criminal investigation.
Beyond the numbers, the incident delivered a sharp reminder of what can be hidden in plain sight. A vacant lot complaint drew officers expecting to address illegal dumping—and instead pulled an expansive meth operation out of the shadows, with major agencies rushing in as the threat became clear.
