Big Y is continuing its push into eastern Massachusetts, announcing plans for a new supermarket in Norton, expected to open in early 2028.
The new 48,000-square-foot store will open at Greatwood Marketplace at 175 Mansfield Ave.
The Norton store is the latest step in Big Y’s expansion beyond its traditional Western Massachusetts territory.
The family-owned grocery chain recently opened a new location in Pembroke and is preparing to open another in Saugus. It also plans to open stores in Fairhaven and North Dartmouth in 2027.
“For 90 years, Big Y has proudly served families across New England, and we are excited to continue that tradition in Norton,” said Matt D’Amour, vice president of real estate and development, in a statement. “As we grow, we remain focused on delivering modern, convenient shopping experiences with the personalized service Big Y is known for.”
In April, Big Y told Boston.com that it was pursuing an ambitious expansion strategy as it works toward 100 stores by its 100th anniversary in 2036.
The company has said it is looking for the right opportunities as it expands, rather than rapidly opening stores across the region.
The Norton store will add to Big Y’s growing footprint, which includes about 80 stores across Massachusetts and Connecticut. The supermarket chain employs more than 10,000 people who operate Big Y supermarkets, Table & Vine fine wine, beer, and liquor, and Big Y Express fuel and convenience locations.
Details about hiring and a grand opening for the Norton store will be announced closer to its opening date, the company said.
